Swettysblazer's 1991 K5 Trazer: ONE TONS!

I am going to start working on this soon and see how I feel about it. Gonna think on it for a bit

A 4 speed swap would only add a day or two.

I'm not referring to the actual trans swap taking 2 years. I was referring to the snowball effect it could create.

Honestly, I don't know why you would want a manual in an offroad rig that sees rock climbs, ledges, etc. I've never been in a situation where I was like "man, I wish I had a 3rd pedal to deal with while I'm perched up on this ledge with a cliff behind me that leads to certain doom" ok, I exaggerated a little

I've never been in a position where I was like, boy, I wish I didn't have near as much control over what this transmission want to do........

I think for now I'm going to stick with the auto. Nothing is wrong with it and it works fine... If that changes though I may consider going to a manual

I'm leaning toward Martin's side of this debate, but what about getting an aftermarket controller for a (newer) automatic? I have a friend with such a setup on his 4L80e. He has customized his shift points to be right where he wants them. And when he wants control, he is just one button-push away from either locking the tranny in or forcing it to shift wherever he wants. Sorta bridges the gap between the two camps. Ryan has his automatic shifting, and Martin has control. And either can switch back and forth seamlessly.

I'd think that both sides are happy...

or I'm about to get pelted with tomatoes from both directions.

(running away really fast)

And Martin appears to have spelling problems today. ;)

And I run a reverse pattern manual valve body for this same reason. Best of both worlds. No clutch to worry about & I can put it in whatever gear I want and it stays there.

Ok I'm done, back to the trazer build

I concur... there's a reason the overwhelming majority of pro offroad rigs are auto's... manny's are fun, but if you want ultimate performance/drivability, a stout RMVB is it...

What are the advantages of this compared to using the stock valve body with controller (like I mentioned before)? It seems like going that way I would have all of the advantages, and still be able to switch it over to automatic shifting if I ever desired. With RMVB, you lose this ability, no? :dunno:

And what great advantage is there to reversing the shift pattern? Are you still using your column shifter, or has that been changed as well?

I didn't read about the controller you mentioned...

the reverse in RMVB gives you the ability to go right between 1 and reverse with just neutral in between... the pattern goes P, R, N, 1, 2, 3, 4... much quicker, easier than going reverse, n, 4,3,2,1 if your trying to rock out of something, etc...

also with the rmvb, shift points, how hard it hits, etc can all be modded/changed..

the manual vb means that you have to shift thru the gears.. the trans will not shift.. basically it's a manual trans, without a clutch...

the other advantage with a 700, is that you no longer have a tv cable, you're at full line pressure at all times...

and I know some get offended, but for any serious performance you can't have a column shifter.. you don't see guys at the track peering thru the steering wheel trying to bump a column shifter up thru the gears... some like em for their own purposes, street driving, whatever.. but it can never come close to a gated floor shifter for performance operation.....

Gotcha.

True for modified valve bodies in general, no?

Right...but if I go the other way I have the ability to manually shift when I want to and automatically shift if I ever want that. Say...someone else wants to borrow my truck at some point. Outside of my awesome family, most of the people I know would not be able to competently drive such a rig. ;)

I could see advantages here...

I'm not offended, I was simply wondering what muddermilitia was running. I can definitely see downsides to column shifters, but I'm not likely to chuck mine anytime soon. I am taking notes on this because I'm considering tranny options for 2 trucks at this point, and I only have 1 NV4500. ;)

depends on what someone wants.... trailered rig that's hardcore? a RMVB may be the way to go, driving to you're trailheads, something else may be better for you, etc, etc...

just like the full line pressure... I see mostly positives, but some feel it put's a lot of wear on the pump...

the offended line wasn't directed at you.. I've just received backlash in the past in here over that...

sorry for the detour Swetty.. ;)

I vote we get going on the :hack::weld::grind::saweet: and worry about technical stuff later

(but I agree with Paul cough cough)

Gonna start working on it this weekend.... I've been saying that the past two weekends but crap has come up and I haven't had a chance to. As long as it doesn't rain Saturday I am gonna try and take the front clip off the Blazer and get some wiring out of it....
