Teck's '86 K5 Build -5.3 LS/4L65E swap

You SHOULD be good with hagarty. It's pretty much just paying the monthly rate for however much you wanna insure your stuff for. You can do the whole she bang online too if you want.

Cool. Well good luck! Let us know how it turns out. Im sure there are a few folks around here that could use the info.

I looked into haggert but they have a mileage limit, etc. I ended up using Grundy, no mileage limit, they just require you have another DD car, and you store it in a garage. Agreed value is no problem, I just had to send them a couple pics. In fact since I built the engine and redid the suspension I called them back and upped the value and it was no problem, just send new pics.

The guy at Grundys told me he didn't think it was something they would insure.

Looks like I have been turned down again
Did ever think that insurance would be the biggest problem I would have with this project.

No kidding? Thats wild! what was the reason this time? How did you insure it before? Just with normal insurance?

That is so bizarre... I guess the reason you are wanting to do special insurance on this is so that you can give them a stated value? Could you (if you actually wanted to) just get it insured as a normal blazer that would only cover the $2,000 ish blue book value?

That is the route most take and just roll the dice with both the money that have spent and the unlikely event that they are sued resulting from an accident.

Personally I would start with a normal policy and call them up after to change it.

I would never mention the 10 inch lift but would say a professionally installed standard readily available aftermarket suspension kit.

I am going to run into headaches on my buggy when I cross this bridge too, mine will be titles and vin'd as a classic landcruiser. It is easy to show they have value based on others and I will use receipts and a 3rd party appraisal.

The liability is the biggest worry and a general umbrella can take care of most that burden if its on your mind and you need something up and above.

Trying to talk to Grundy's again and not call it a lift kit but a custom suspension, just hope when they ask for pics they don't tell me no. Only talked to a guy on the phone about it on Friday so they haven't really done anything for me yet.

Wow this has really bummed me out about it. 3 years to come to this BS.
Sound like it might have been ok if it only had a 4" suspension on it. WTF

So tell them it's 4:whistle:

Most insurance agents don't know the difference between a tire and a wheel, let alone anything specific so you're probably fine just saying "lift kit" and nothing more specific.

True statement.

Or drop it on some stock springs and tires long enough to take the pics if it ends up mattering that much. It's not like they go back and check every stock vehicle that has ever been insured to see if it has been lifted and by how much.

Problem with that is that if he were to get in an accident the insurance company could say "we didnt agree to insure this type of vehicle, we agreed to insure the vehicle in the picture." Then, he would get sued for the accident.

But if he bought a blazer and insured it, then lifted it it wouldn't have any of that information on there either. Same with a brand new truck off the lot. I'm not 100% sure on this, just going with what I'm aware of.

I know what you're saying, but unless they specify a lift height limit in the policy, what basis would they have to deny him coverage versus any other person who put a lift on their truck?

I have asked them to explain why you can buy a bran new truck with a lift and get insurance but they don't want to cover my. They just say it does fit in their scope of what they cover.

They tell me how nice it looks, but then tell me they won't cover because of the lift, like it is a piece of junk and that I shouldn't even be asking for classic car insurance.

If I had have know this I would have never wasted my time building this again.

Tech...Your build is definitely not a waste. I know your frustration when it comes close to the end only to find out you have another hurdle. Times and companies are definitely nothing like they were 10+ years ago but, I feel the challenge is worth the end result. Just think there isn't another K5 like yours anywhere...and just as one of a kind your K5 is there is insurance for it with someone!

Pep talk over LOL.

BAD AXX RIDE!!!

just to clarify, you can insure it through a regular company for blue book value, right?

obviously that wouldn't cover the work you've put into it, but it should get you on the road and cover the other guy if are at fault in an accident. if the other guy is at fault, as long as you have good documentation (like this thread) their insurance should cover it.

it's a bummer not to be fully covered, but not exactly "I wish I'd never done this bad". or did I miss something?

of course, if you just want to say F the whole thing, I'll take it off your hands. ;)

Im curious what details you are giving, shouldnt give, should give, should omit, etc. Sure seems like an easy truck to insure. I cant believe you are having trouble at all. Could always do what would make your truck perfect to me anyway and lower it down to 4"-6" lift on 35's or so if the worst comes to worse.
