I like the idea of being able to run the same fluid in all 3 units. That makes packing extra super easy.
And if you put it in the power steering ,
You've simplified it more!

I started buying full synthetic ATF from Schaeffer oil for $28 a gallon. It only says up to Dex III, but that works for my old stuff. I can't say if it is anything better than conventional stuff yet, but I have liked the results from their other products. It just isn't wonderful to buy a case of 6 gallons , but a case of quarts is $8.50/ qt.

Yeah the conversation I was having with Rob was about heat. Takes like 20-30 minutes to get GL4 warm enough to do anything functional

Will definitely be looking into this

My new transmission is a later model (late 80s?) and the 205 & 203 both had ATF in it.

Rear diff is getting synthetic

205 is a 205 unless its a syncro 205 but there kind of rare these days . and that was for front shaft output and factory auto locking hubs.

Well without going through the parts catalogs year to year to note changes in bearing part numbers I can't say if there is a difference between the years that required gear oil to the ones that required Dex 2 or 3. Searching the web brings back a dozens of results in different areas. That adds to the confusion.

Going by what I can see in Mitchell pro-demand what I stated before is true. Mitchell uses direct info from the OEMs. I'll go grab a couple of the old service manuals in our library at work and confirm it and report back.

One other thing is coming from memory. I had a professor in college that was formerly a tech at a gm dealer prior to going back to school himself. His specialty was transmissions. His time in the dealer world was 70's to 80's. He told us a story where he serviced a manual trans on a mid 80's k truck and out of instinct filled it with 80/90 gear oil. After servicing it the truck came back with a complaint of hard shifting when cold. He went back and rechecked the spec to find it needed dexron 2. Dumped and refilled with the right stuff and gave it back. Customer had no further complaints.

That is purely anecdotal for sure, but it does support what Mitchell pro-demand notes.

I'll check the factory books and report back.

I should know better. Reading from home on my shop account to Mitchell pro-demand it listed Dex 2 for the 4 speed manual trans. It did not make any distinction between trans by option code. 465's go by M20 just so you know. Pulling the oldest book I got in the library aka break room at work was for 1990 r/v trucks. For the M20 trans it is listing sae 80w90 gear oil. Important to note it is not listing the gl-5 designation for the trans. The transfer case listing was Dex 2.

So if this does anything, it muddies up the water. Some have found thinner oil in 465's like bent has in his second one. Others all swear it's 80/90 only. I made it worse with my Dex 6 rambling. Must have been all that turkey yesterday.

That being said, your results may vary. I will say this the gm service manual did prove the use of Dex 2 in the t-case. That I'm sure of. Sorry for derailing the thread for a page on my ramblings...
