I fall somewhere in the middle on this argument. While bone stock is reliable and less likely to break parts, once you lift one of these pigs and throw 35-37" tires on it even with regearing the axles they still tend to be slugs climbing grades on the highway. Yeah a full tilt all aluminum big block will keep you in high gear climbing to the tunnel or vail pass, but 15g's is a ton of coin and will lead to broken parts on the trail if you can't control your foot on the skinny pedal.

Now there is a happy medium somewhere I think. Bent's got the right idea, build torque down low. Good flowing heads and intake build for torque vs all out HP, a full roller valvetrain with a cam designed for torque down low and you got the goods. That should keep the power up on the hills and still be safe off road.

You know what’s funny is this is a different engine to some people, you and I and Babaganoosh it’s a 5.3/6.0 to wade it’s a tb350 to others it’s a big block.. I think the use Case has to be considered when looking at this. @Bent77 and I have talked till we’re blue in the face about this and I still vote for the fitech sbc route. Simple, less conversion crap, and still retains the usable low end torque he’ll never make back with an ls unless he goes high comp and big cubes which defeats the purpose.. he’s not railing berms at 70, he’s crawling.. and not fast..

I think people just are over analyzing it. It really isn't so hard to learn. Pretty sure Wade knows his way around them but hiding in the corner. From what I have seen he knows his way around electronics and modern injection.

My dead stock TBI has never let me down crawling. I've never thought gee if I just had more torque I would have made that.

Where my dead stock stuff leaves me sad is sand and mud and snow, and the desert. Much higher rpm stuff.

But I certainly understand the desire to keep it simple.

It’s one or the other, same end result.. he already has gearing but doesn’t want or need the added bs of the ls because it doesn’t see 55-60 often?

Maybe I'm just disagreeable tonight, but lower gears in crawling will beat lots of torque with only alright gears. The end result isn't the same. Speaking specifically of low speed technical crawling. Gears will win that battle everytime.

More fun to have both.

Well I have 105:1

What I really need is grunt at highway speed, mainly 2500-2800 peak

I analyze it in the aspect of:
For the same price of swapping in a used LS engine, I can have a new engine that makes more torque in the range I need to use it in, without going BBC


And FWIW, I like a perfectly disagreeable Eric. The devils advocate role is needed in every conversation, and I encourage you to continue

Your right about the ultra low speed control I won’t argue with that. But still it’s all just torque so quit being disagreeable I’m just “twisting” your arm!! Haha see what I did there.. lol.. (knee slapper)
 
If this truck didn't have a dump truck trans, the gear spilts wouldn't be so bad!!

But since it's geared to not need an overdrive, I think the bent one is on the right track. With 4:10s and 37s, there needs to be some low RPM torque to run up the hill.
 
I'm still stuck in the late night football haze... I can't remember, do you currently have EFI? If not, does that work in to the budget? While I'm inclined to vote for the fresh, solid SBC, it's hard to ignore that a used LS could come with EFI / computer / harness etc.

Haven’t ruled out a donor truck with everything LS for the swap

The prices have been fairly high here for those, even with sone miles. If I found one cheap enough, I’d contemplate a rebuild. But the price fir the total swap is still not a “value”

There is a 6.0L with 35k miles here.. they said $1200 for motor/pcm/ecm/wiring harness... for an 8.1L its closer to $1800...

In name only. On the block and head change they retained the name. LS series engines have separated exhaust ports like a big block
Speaking of the siamesed exhaust port style Vortec engines
