Yep program required due to the standard transmission. Which also adds new flywheel and bell housing.
Program probably require a couple retunes I would suspect.

On an 8.1, bell housing of SM465 bolts up just fine, and your current clutch pack will work just fine, just need to get 8.1 specific flywheel and that's it...ok, I'll stop with the 8.1 pestering, haha

Yeah I got in my head the bell needed changed for some reason.

Need a flywheel for everything but a Gen1 SBC. So at least I can figure the cost.
 
So I don't know if you realize it, but lots of TBI 350s are roller cam capable. I just gave one away a few months ago. The one in my '90 Jimmy is as well. I found that out when I did timing set and intake gaskets. I have seen plenty of them drilled and tapped, and some just have the casting for the lifter spider and such.
 
So if this is for driving I assume you don't want to shift out of 4th on the road?

What's your typical speed and cruise RPM. My biggest whine about the 465 ( and the nv4500 for that matter) is the 3 to 4 split. The 8.1 could very well be the answer. But so could a cammed 6.0 or stroker 5.3 that makes it max power at 3 grand and over

but starting out at 3000 rpm.. 8.1 465ft lb torque @ what.. ummm ... turn key.. that would be... called?????? idle??? LOL

We were just talking about this, the port cross section of any ls is like a large port 190cc sbc head vs the port of those are 160ish or so depending on the head so the capacity for the engine to be a torque monster below that 3k threshold is greater regardless of the cam.. also cubes obviously. So unless a roots style huffer is installed or strokes made bigger etc I don’t see any ls aside the ls7 making the low end torque.. I just don’t see it.. the stock cam is tiny so if it was gonna do it stock would be the way it would do it..

I run between 2200-2800 on the highway. That’s operating at the speed limit.
When we dynoed a similar (that I’m looking at building) engine before, it was making 415 peak tq at 3100 and 370 hp at 5600.

It’s an option as well. My concern is rod angularity on the 383s. A good stroker likes 6” rods, and then it gets expensive. My spreadsheet will have a 383 option, couple 5.3/6.0 options, and a BBC in addition to the SBC

Also of note is the head I will spec for the SBC would be 1.94 valve not 2.02, helping to generate port velocity which helps the torque

The last 350 we built, had a sister. Identical as much as we could.
Flat top pistons
Factory unported 1.94 cast iron heads (76cc chamber) and intake.
.410 lift hydraulic flat tappet

Dynoed 425 Hp at 6100, 460 lb/ft
 
All of this makes me think back to the late 60's Buick engines like the 430 and first 455. Small valve heads, combined with the stroke and rod combo gave great torque numbers down low.

Those are damn near diesel low end numbers.. 455 if it wasn’t so dang heavy and weird parts wise it would be a good motor for this stuff
