The Brandy Build

A build taking a faded, rusty, 1988 k5 and transforming it into a more or less restored, 1974 full convertible.
Slow week, I’ve been kinda busy, windshield frame is done, took the top back off, and I got one bed rail done, (don’t think I have a picture of it finished) I’ll probably finish the other one tomorrow. 6AF57115-0F8F-42DE-93EA-C979B4AECADD.jpeg176D3F91-2C28-4615-8CBE-079C3D5B261E.jpeg

CC6CE720-1827-421B-BC86-FD42E78093DD.jpegLong time with no update, I apologize. I always get busy this time of year. What started this lack of progress was a week trip down to Florida and I just didn’t get back to it like I should have after that. I have worked on it here and there, I got everything finished around the windshield frame, I had to redo the plates that cover the holes where the b pillar was because I wasn’t happy with them. They look a lot better now. I have a list of things I want to do before I start on bondo so I’ll be working on knocking those out in the next few weeks. I have a pile of parts I don’t need anymore. Most of it is junk, some of it has a little value. I’ll most likely give it all to the guy I get my squarebody parts from if no one wants them so I wanted to make sure there were no takers here first. 7C0AF482-E047-4BE1-AA83-965479BF3DD4.jpegThere’s a crossmember for a 700r4 and 208 combo. Front and rear driveshaft for the same combo k5 length. Front driveshaft for a 465/205 combo. 700r4 shift linkage, brake peddle for an automatic. Brand new alternator with one of the ears bent/cracked (not my fault and rock auto wouldn’t take it back) brand new oil pan for a 350 that barely touched the crankshaft. Not sure the issue there. The return shipping was almost as much as the refund and not worth the trouble if I recall. 208 shifter. Ecm for an 88. Lots of random plugs that could be useful? Intake for a tbi 350, throttle body for the intake. Brand new power steering pump that didn’t fit my bracket for some reason. (Forgot to return that one). I think that’s it. Like I said mostly junk but you never know what someone needs. I think that crossmember is the most useful piece there. If anyone wants it it’s yours for free but I don’t really want to ship anything. I’m in southwest Ohio about 40 minutes north of Cincinnati. More updates on the project coming soon I promise.

Not much noteworthy progress but I haven’t stopped working on it. I got the shop cleaned out which helps a bunch. Got rid of a bunch of junk parts. Even replaced the old bulbs that had gone out so it’s nice and bright now.D5580ED9-8FD3-43B6-876C-34219B29E276.jpeg I finally cleaned up and put in the middle grill support for a 73-74 grill that I had laying around for awhile. The guy I gave all the junk parts to gave me a transfer case skid plate so I cleaned that up and put it in. 5A9490C4-6B82-4943-9057-750D4C416CA1.jpegI had a good bit of seam sealing I wanted to do so I got that done. Right now I’m trying to get a throttle set up and check a few other little things off the list. Very anxious to get started on the body filler.

The throttle is set up. I didn’t even know they made these brackets for the throttle cable. Worked perfect for me. B5698F1F-B226-4952-930F-B867A6FD32B9.jpegI’ll have to pick up a longer return spring this one is a little stretched as you can see but it does the job for now. I also put on some header wrap to keep heat down a little better. What a massive pain in the butt. I only did one side but it was not fun. I ran out of ties so I’m waiting for more. I’m taking the drivers side off to wrap it and I’ll likely take off the passenger side and redo it. It’s probably ok but I’m not totally happy with it. It’s really difficult to do in tight spaces like that. D7BF41C9-7F1C-4767-983E-0C64FBAF00A7.jpeg
leaving for a week so I’ll get on that when I get back.

So much better. I highly recommend taking the headers off. Not worth trying to do it with them on the engine and god forbid you try with it in the engine bay.

Ok, headers are done, I’m much happier with how they turned out than my first attempt.D7DEF7A9-D2D0-41A3-B4C7-E12530AB98F2.jpeg I’ve been struggling with this for awhile now. 770C624E-1ED2-4595-B20F-3C4953194526.jpegI’m trying to get the headlight switch circuit, turn signal/brights/windshield wipers/washers circuits, and horn, all figured out and working properly. It’s a complete mess though, the wiper wires have been cut and spliced into a toggle switch, the headlight switch has been cut, horn isn’t grounding out either. It’s a mess. I picked up a new switch for the blinkers and all that just to rule it out. I’ll see what I can do about the horn ground while I have it apart. I went ahead and replaced all the fuses and I’m going to do the relays as well although there’s only like 3 of them. Big pain though. I hate wiring. Can anyone tell me what this is for? C7133BBC-3046-4EAE-AF70-3A943181E9AD.jpegComes off the column. It has a spot on the bottom for something to plug into but as far as I can tell I don’t have a connector for it anywhere. Oh yeah and after this I have to figure out why my reverse lights aren’t coming on…

Looks like a wiper delay module.

Good work! Enjoying following along.
Yep, just looked it up and that’s exactly what it is. Add another thing to the list of things I have to sort out lol. And thank you I appreciate it.

IIRC, you should have a pigtail coming from the bulkhead fitting with the proper connector to plug into the bottom of the module.

Hopefully it's as easy as plug and play.

Thanks, I’ll look for it again. There’s a good chance mine is fried because like I said the wires for the wipers are on a toggle currently so it could be that it went out and the po botched it for that reason.

Ok I’ve been knocking most of the the wiring problems out. Not without a lot of help of corse. I had to do a separate thread for all this stuff so thanks everyone that’s been helping there. https://ck5.com/forums/threads/electrical-geniuses-needed.344097/
Ive got the headlights, brights, horn, turn signals, hazards, brake, and reverse lights working. I picked up some parts I needed today and got them for free. The horn button cleaned up nice 81B13A12-2408-415E-B537-DD6E74FCD2ED.jpeg

I’m anxious to get to body filler and paint but I want to knock out all this stuff so I’m not doing it after it’s painted, as boring as it is.

Still messing with wiring but making good progress. One of the last things I wanted to get working was the tailgate window circuits. I thought it was worth mentioning the inner workings of the key tailgate switch. It’s super simple. The little lobe turns with the key left and right and presses one of the contacts against a terminal. 8AE9D638-781E-4E4C-AA48-F6A5B871890A.jpeg1F4D1274-5792-4C8E-AF8B-3517F93C0439.jpegThat terminal sends power through one of the two wires that goes to the motor. One side makes it go up one makes it go down. I cleaned the terminals on mine and had to hot glue the wires in the back of the switch because the plastic was falling apart but it works perfect now. B3C8ECE4-7F3B-45CD-82C0-69B7B80D2AA1.jpegThe motor even works. I figured it was worth mentioning because I can’t find a new one of those switches anywhere and they’re easy to get working again.

Scored big today,A9F0568D-D1ED-49BD-9DA1-6E09A16B3999.jpeg I’m doing a little work for the guy that has a square body junkyard near me and he gave me these today. I’ll have to move the light switch down and rewire the wipers but I’m really happy about this. It needs some cleaning up but i think it will turn out great. It works out well because it looks like I need a new wiper switch in the column anyway so I can just wire this one up instead. F8C46D02-B337-472D-9AB8-81294910ECD3.jpegThe same guy says he thinks he has a manual column with tilt so I might be getting that from him too.

All the little things that I needed to get done are now done. Other things will pop up but I feel like I’m ready to get going on body filler very soon. I’m going to epoxy primer all the bare metal to seal it up and then do body filler on top of that. I ordered a can of the primer and I want to see how it covers before I order the rest but the plan is to do a panel at a time once I get the metal as clean as possible. I went ahead and did the chrome paint trick on the gauge cluster housing. I also replaced all the lights in it with the 168 ones (the brighter ones) so my gauges should be nice and bright. I’ll have to take a picture when it’s all together. Before and after. Im going to try to once again get it in for exhaust this week. shouldn’t be any problems this time. It will be interesting to see how they want to route it because there’s very little room between the transfer case and frame rail on the passenger side and I’d like to keep it away from the fuel lines so that could get interesting but we’ll see. I’ll also be painting the wheels soon and probably getting tires as well. Need to get the roll bar made too. Lots of work left but getting closer to paint every day.
