The Camper Thread

I am the same way lol.

I like the idea of setting up a "base camp" and doing an extended stay.

Can't believe I never stumbled upon this thread before. So here is my contribution even though some have already seen it. Near as my friend and I can figure its from the 1960's. Manufactured by McCoy which is long since defunct. Actually came from Indianola which is about 45 minutes from home.

No interior shots but I will get some, I haven't touched it or the truck since I brought it home a few weeks ago.

I can't get over the fact of how clean it looks from the outside.

The inside isn't quite as good but not too bad either. The stove has already been deleted and the sink is inoperable. I'm not going to fix the sink either I may just take that whole side counter out and make something different from it. It's old enough it doesn't have a refrigerator it has an icebox. I've got a fridge for it but it's pretty large so some woodwork will be required and the box for the gas bottles has to go as well

Had a great weekend camping. It was our first weekend out with the entire family for an overnight stay. We camped Friday and Saturday night, and came home Sunday. Our youngest did great. Took his nap both days and went to bed just fine. It was a little tough once the rest of us went to bed, as he woke up from what he thought was a nap. After some persuasion, he went to sleep just fine.

had a bit of bad luck, although it is entirely my fault. I had taken the camper off the dually to get the dually worked on and left the camper up high so I could put it back on the dually. had a storm come up and wash around the jacks and then the wind blew it over. good news is I don't think it was really hurt. no windows were busted out. the driver rear and passenger front jack mounting look fine and it completely ripped the passenger rear out and partly on the driver front. I have already ordered new jacks and have it sitting back upright.
I had got the big truck cause I planned on taking 2, but it isn't long enough. so.........

after some discussion my wife and I are thinking about getting a new slide in camper, I am looking at either the Lance 850 or Palomino HS-2901. wondering if anyone had any input or another camper I should look at. I will probably fix the one I have and end up selling it. why? I plan on retiring in less than 4 years (at 56) and then I would really like to travel and wheel more. to that end I am wanting a camper that does not have a lot of overhang so I don't have to use a truss hitch. staying away from slide outs to save weight.
my plan is to be able to flat tow the JK to the mountains and I would also like to go out to California or Arizona or ? to wheel and to that end I want a trailer I can put a JK on as well as a buggy.

Here's my current travel trailer setup. 26' hybrid bunkhouse (Sleeps 10? What a joke!). 2500 Suburban Quadrasteer. Only have 1 overnight + 1 trip on it, but that's over 6000 miles.

Mods (so far):
  • Water pump quieted with line loops and accumulator (stock is pump straight to PEX).
  • Worthless stock bathroom fan replaced with Vortex fan.
  • Bathroom wall switch swapped to a dual, for light & fan - so kids don't have to step on the toilet to reach fan switch
  • All interior lights swapped to LED
  • Stock single battery replaced with dual Interstates
  • Bed extension to bridge couch and dinette beds to "turtle" in noisy or grizzly bear country

How do you tell what size camper is the right length for your truck? My truck has a 6.5" bed. I'm looking on CL for a used one. Most adds say they will fit long or short bed but I feel like that can't be true.

Got it. My tow rig is a 2012 duramax 2500 extra cab reg bed, it has air bags installed already. And I'll be towing my Jimmy
