The Cummins K30

quick question.. what size return line did you do? and did you have to modify the tank pick up fuel line? I know people say to run a bigger return, but are they installing a bigger line in the actual in tank pick up?

I used a 3/8" feed and a 5/16" return line. The stock dodge used 5/16" feed and 1/4" return. I changed both sending units out to ones from a 75 chevy truck. No fuel pump and no emissions, just a feed and a return port on each one

The power steering pump on the truck has been on borrowed time for quite awhile, so i decided to replace it. I dont understand whats so hard about ordering a replacement power steering pump for a 91 dodge, but the local car quest cant seem to get it right. Anyhow, after ordering 3 pumps I finally got the right one. I put it on and ran it for a week and it mysteriously quit working. I pulled it off to take it back in and found i had broken the input shaft clean off.

I know a guy that has been through 4 of them on his suburban. where they broke like that. But never seen one on a dodge. Buddys burb is a 94, has hydroboost and power steering with a 454. Says every time it has been pulling into a parking spot while cranked hard right and on the brakes.

My '92 CTD went through 3 of them while owned it then on the poor sob who bought its test drive. Had a friend went through another 2 on his for some reason older dodges seem to like eating input shafts:confused:

So what's the fix on the input shaft issue?

What I meant was, is there a more permanent fix to broken shafts and blown steering pumps besides replacing them as we go?

Buy oem or try to find one that's new and not rebuilt. IMO all aftermarket pumps are junk.

I've done 4 this year with broken shafts

This one broke while I was at an idle sitting still and just using the brakes. I went with a rebuilt ( lifetime warranty) pump from car quest. I hope I won't have to start regularly changing broken pumps now.

Cummins motors were put in a ton of different trucks. UPS, FedEx, Freightliner, and Ford F-600's. I would really like to find a pump off one of those trucks and run it, but I don't know where to look, or exactly what application or year the trucks had the pump I'm after

Probably all the aftermarket ones use shafts made in a foreign country that is not known for their quality control.

I often find myself dreaming of this truck late at night.
Bump for some much needed updates!
