The Green Machine - parked

No oil pressure while cranking, and remembering the oil pump is driven by the dizzy I pulled the cap and the rotor spun freely for a quarter turn.
 
Doesn't sound like it would be a bad idea to pull the pan and clean it out and eyeball everything.
 
Why would it shear ? Would be the guestion I would be trying to answer.

yeah, don't just throw another one in there and call it good. hmmm is this the stock cam and dizzy? Just wondering about the metals. I like KGB's list

With 240k miles on it, and knowing this is a fairly common problem on vortec motors, it just wore out.

Nope, to both. Ran smooth as silk today back and forth to work.

I put a new filter on and have a magnetic drain plug, so if it has filings I'll be worried then, but otherwise I think I'll be ok.
 
The Camaro did that to me with an aftermarket cam. I replaced the gear with a GM melonized gear and filed a small slit in it to help with oiling. Also replaced the drain plug with a magnetic plug and have been driving it ever since. Love the Yukon by the way!
 
I think I figured out my cold starting problem. Low cranking voltage caused by a weak battery that is caused by an overstressed alternator that can't charge the battery through heavily corroded cables. Perfect trifecta. The battery is 6 years old and the alternator and cables are both 17. I'm actually surprised the stock alternator has lasted so long, gm ones don't typically last so long it seems.
