The Hellcat Blazer

Just a budget Blazer build out of control
I've been super busy at work lately, and I've been focusing on some performance mods to the Camaro. Going from 15" to 17" wheels so I can run some proper racing tires for the autocross track, and making some suspension adjustments and modifications. Speaking of:

Snapchat-54062153.jpg
Snapchat-1528534522.jpgI finally installed the ORD sway bar, and it's SO much more planted in the corners (obv). I have it on the softest setting and it's great. IDK why I waited so long to get it on. I got BOTH driveshafts here too, and got them installed. They look great and fit perfectly.

I have 1410 U-joints on the rear driveshaft, and I got a 10 bolt 1410 yoke machined to fit the 12 bolt seal diameter. Boom, custom. 1350 joints up front with a 6 or 7" slip, fits like a glove. For the first time since I BOUGHT the truck originally, I have 4wd!

I took it to the eighth mile strip we have here to christen it last weekend, and the 10 bolt front held up to a 4wd launch no problem! I didn't go completely WOT, but gave it a solid ~80% from a dead stop. I spun all 4 for a sec then it took off. No wheel hop up front. Due to some now-fixed ECU settings, I accidentally spun it to almost 7000rpm twice before figuring it out. I had to let off on both runs for it to shift then get back into it. But it survived and I drove it home! I set the new limiter to 6300, and shift points to 6200. I'm probably gonna drop the shifts to 6k flat, I see 9-10psi at 6k and 12ish at 7k rpm. I wasn't really looking at the handheld on the strip. It was a huge hit with the people there, though. I gapped the heck out of some guy in a BMW, and walked a pretty built 2018-ish Cummins (hit that one in 4wd). I've had a blast driving this thing around this summer. It ran high 8's with the bad settings and ~130 degree intake temps. I didn't bring any ice because I didn't plan on racing it, and it was a 45min drive there. With the fixed settings, some ice, and some WOT, I'm definitely good for low 8's, maybe high 7's.

The only footage I have is of my first/slowest race, in 2wd against a VW. Don't mind the abhorrent reaction time, this was my first time on a strip and I was 70% sure I was gonna blow her up, lol. You can hear that I wasn't in it very hard, but now I'm confident she can handle more next time!

Excited to see 4 wheel
Burnouts/launches once the driveshafts show up!

Would be a killer sleeper from a dig, nobody would expect it. Could probably hustle a couple people
It definitely hits from a dig. I need to build up the confidence to let it eat 100%, but it works right now and I'm nervous to smash the loud pedal off the line lol

When does the 2step get installed? Would love to see the 80%+ launch. This is awesome
I never thought about doing a 2 step with the PD blower lol I just footbraked it, but I know there's an option in the ECU for it. I just gotta figure out where to put the button!

Any updates on this beast?
I keep thinking I should come and post updates, but it has been great! I don't have much to say about it, other than I love it! had a humming from the transmission, took it apart, and had a worn bushing. I did find, though, that 2nd gear was hanging up on the 2-3 shift. I thought it was a tune problem, but I could see evidence of slipping. I put in new steels, a billet intermediate spring retainer, and 12 th400 springs. Does just fine now!

I posted it for sale, as I have plans for The Hellcat Blazer V2. Gonna be fully fiberglass, and caged. If it doesn't sell, it doesn't matter because I love it lol. So win-win. I've been working a ton, and racing my Camaro a lot, both autocross and around town. She may be getting a little nitrous just for 3rd gear. I wasn't able to take the Blazer to DuneFest this year because they canceled it, so no content on that. I also was finally able to go get my Nova from California, re-wiring that right now and then re-painting as well. If the Blazer sells, I'll build Hellcat Blazer V2. If the Nova sells, turbo big block car. We'll see how things play out

Took the K5 shooting with my girlfriend, and got a little air on the trail! We were cruising down a dirt trail, and I couldn't keep my foot from feathering the throttle to hear that whine! Lol. Slid around a bend and saw a bump, and let her eat a little bit. I have no idea how high, but everything in the back re-organized itself :haha: Thankfully, everything was in hard cases. I still really need to get my bump stops and limit straps in (oops) but I have been working some insane hours lately. However, no bad contact was made. It didn't land super hard, I doubt I was in the danger zone on the landing. Everything looks fine and it drives as good as it did before! Now I kinda want to send it on video...

Anyway, this is a small little climb at the closest range. Nothing crazy, but a solid 35 degree incline. Walks right up with barely any wheel slip.

That's all the updates I have! It's still super fun to drive, turns heads everywhere, and the blower screams!

WELP, I had a headlight go out, so I guess it's time for all new headlights. Shopped around for a while, and these just fit the build so perfectly, I had to get them.

I figured calling it "The Redeye Blazer" kind of fits the build more, plus 25% of people that see it are like "ThAtS nOt A hElLcAt" and yeah, it's not. So she is now the Redeye Blazer, with the blower AND the headlights!

New taillights are here as well, bulbs get here Saturday. I'll post em when I get them in! I also have some nice LED side markers installed in the front, I'll get a shot of those later as well.

I forgot to mention, I went to a weigh station today. With a 90% full tank, full 5gal intercooler reservoir, audio system, and that enormous supercharger it came in at 5480 with me in it. So right at 5250 without me, which is better than expected! It moves really well for over 5k lbs. I still haven't lost a race to anyone who has been willing to roll on the highway, even with some of these big turbo diesel guys

I bet you are having a lot of fun with that thing, I like the sound and I like the color too.

I've found that when it comes to a drag race, both in actual performance, and math, the HP/lb is what predicts the performance, not the torque.

I've raced and beaten many diesel trucks that were tuned to over 1,000 ft-lbs at the wheels, and beat them with my NA BBC truck. Some of these were actual dirt drags with timing systems, and others just sand drags for fun.

My truck was about 5630 with me in it. The diesel trucks are usually over 7000 lbs, but often when they have 1000 ft-lbs, they have about 500 HP, and their HP/lb was lower than mine, hence they lost, by quite a bit.

Now, put a 12k trailer behind it, and the low RPM torque will outperform similar HP numbers. Towing and racing are not the same, particularly when people expect the trans to not downshift with a gasser that makes peak torque at 4200, not 1800.

Here are the taillights, I keep forgetting to post the video. I'm buying a house, prepping for the holidays, and worked 64 hours last week so I've been suuuper busy, lol.

They fit exactly as well as the stock housings (not perfectly) but swapping the trim over definitely brought the look together. It took some sanding/trimming of the new housing to fit the trim over it, they're a few millimeters larger on the ends, but I like em! The headlights are also plenty bright, but not insane. Overall I'm happy with my LED conversion. I think it was like $220 for everything, front/rear as well as the side markers.
