I always use the metal sleeve shaft just for piece of mind, but that doesn't mean that the plastic will break.
Does it have a higher chance of cracking and breaking, yes, especially if it gets old and brittle. But ideally it should have almost no load because it just keeps it centered.
I think the chances of it breaking are quite slim, it's just one of those things where the consequences could be quite high, so I choose to play it safe. It's the same with the cam bolt lock plates. I haven't seen one come loose personally thus far, but I still use locking plates when available or loctite when not. Because if the cam bolts do back out, it can be catastrophic.
Just a matter of managing risk, if the chances are high or the consequences are severe then I play it safe. If the chances are slim and the consequences are null, then it likely doesn't matter.

Have a lot of work yet. Engine was out with the transmission just hand tightened this morning. Torqued the head and intake, tightened the clutch and all 23 scattershield bolts, assembled the radiator. Then turned it around and got this far. Still some underneath work and wiring
What is going on there? Twisted?

Hate to think how that would have turned out on a healthy clutch dump. Oil leak did me a solid in that aspect
When my c10 broke the trans in half it ripped the entire mount in half. the bolts were still in the trans and the cross member... It came from amazon.
