The RedBurb

Every Part Is Replaceable
Temperature switch replaced and appears to have corrected the issue. Idle is back to normal. Minimal coolant loss.

I may have corrected another issue unintentionally. In my research, I discovered that difficult hot starts can be the result of a failing temp switch. It’s described as cold starting just fine, drive around a while and shut it down and try to hot start and it struggles or even fails to start. This was the reason why I installed the starter relay, and while the relay made a difference, it didn’t really 100% solve the issue.

Well, after installing the new temp switch, I let the engine get up to temp then shut it down. Cranked it again with the hot engine and it fired right up, better than the cold start. I’m not sure if there’s a difference between a hot start after a few minutes of idling vs a hot start after 30 minutes or more of highway driving, but it’s a good sign. I’ll try to test drive it more tomorrow and see if there’s any difference.

In the very least, the high idle appears to be fixed.

The 60 is just about completely gutted. The shock tabs are cut off and the ring and pinion gears and carrier have been pulled. Still need to pull the inner axle seals but that’s it, aside from finishing cleaning the grime off and painting it.

Inner axle seals are out.

Any recommendations for cleaning up the inside of the housing and axle tubes? Just lots of brake kleen?

Brake klean for the big stuff. Then a strong degreaser, purple power or even the heavy duty dawn. Lowes and Home Depot carry it in large bottles.

I’ll repost this here for more visibility and because this defect affects my plans for Rusty:

After being installed for only 7 months, the vinyl headliner is separating from the hard board in BluJay. I LMC up and they promptly issued me a full refund, but now I have to decide 1) what to do about BluJay’s headliner and 2) what to do about Rusty’s headliner and if I’ll still install the second set in Rusty or do something different all together. Taking suggestions.

Here are the before pics, right after installation:

This is bad.
Thanks for letting us know how bad it is.
I am starting to think that the best thing is doing some lightweight framing and putting some paneling instead of liners

Yeah wanted to share so people are aware. LMC asked me to send them photos so they could check the rest of their stock and probably go back to the vendor.

I’m thinking I may do the same thing on my burb, have seen some similar stuff on Instagram - nice tongue and groove jobs. Just not sure how to proceed with the BluJay. If I do wood paneling on mine, I may put the extra set of headliners in the BluJay and see if it was just a one-time defect, although I doubt it was.

Looks like whatever glue they use is not heat friendly or is it humidity?

Probably heat. But seems to me that a product that will be constantly exposed to heat should take that into account during the design and production.

Our plan is two fold:

1) Since we have an extra headliner, it’ll replace the failing vinyl headliner in hers and we will see how long it lasts.
2) I’ll do a tongue and groove or shiplap ceiling in mine. That’ll give me a taste for the labor involved, and if the 2nd headliner fails too, then hers will get the same T&G treatment as mine.

But there’s a whole lot of other work to be done before any of that becomes priority.

Nice work sir! That axle is looking good!

FWIW, I am still running those factory Dodge shock tabs. Not a single issue yet. But I can see that you've already removed yours so it's a moot point lol.

Thanks! Yeah I thought a lot about whether or not to keep them, but with what’s coming up, realized longer travel shocks are going to be in order, so now was the time to change it up.

It’s almost time to get some moving parts installed in this empty housing.

In the meantime, the painting continues ...

It looks like the glue they used is failing. You might be able to separate the vinyl from the backer board. Clean it, and reglue it. Or if you know a real good interior place. They may be able to fix it. Or at least tell you if it's worth it.

@AugustDiesel, I had a local upholstery guy redo my factory headliners. $40 later I had new cloth and new glue. It has mostly sat since then, but it has been 4 years without seeing any degradation. Find your local shop and ask them how they would solve this problem. :waytogo:

Good suggestions from both and worth a shot. Especially if they can fix what’s there.
