The RedBurb

Every Part Is Replaceable
Well I’m kinda bummed. Was out just looking stuff over on the red burb and discovered the prior owner cut the steering shaft out, instead of unbolting/removing it. Not an earth-shaker, but this was actually a pretty decent steering column and I was looking forward to getting back to a tilt wheel.

Oh well. The non-tilt is still good to go.

You can definitely fix it. But to do it right you really need to pull the column apart. Again very doable. But since you have a good one, I wouldn't bother fixing this one.

Have been getting a lot done over the last two days.

Got my parents zero turn running yesterday. Have it a new hydro pump. Need to purge the system then it’s ready to go home and get out of my garage.

Mounted the winch and mount on the car hauler today. Got to get the control box remote mounted and then that beast will be ready to go home.

Also did some musical chairs with the burbs today. The old chassis rolled around to the driveway where I’ll be pulling the engine and getting it set up on a stand followed by the trans, tcase, and axles. Time to strip this old frame down and get it ready for scrap.

Then rolled the red burb onto the back patio where it will stay for a while.

Didn’t get pictures of everything but here are a couple.

You went from "how do I weld stuff?" To, "look, I'm a fab shop".

I guess that’s a good thing, haha. Although once I get these two side projects done I’ll have to resist future ones otherwise I’ll never get my own stuff done.

But, speaking of fabbing stuff.

When I got started on the transmission aka hydraulic pump on my parents zero turn, there was absolutely no way I could get it out, that I could see, without pulling the engine. I clearly wasn’t going to do that, so, instead, I cut out the crossmember that the seat sits on…

Pump came right out. Old pump next to the new pump:

New pump in:

And I just so happened to have a length or scrap that was the PERFECT size to weld to the crossmember and overlap so that it could be bolted to those two uprights in the frame on either side:

It’s painted and hanging in the kitchen curing.

It’ll get installed later this week.

It is fun to solve a problem with a simple solution, that should have been designed that way.

I talked to a guy who used to work on these things and he said they did stuff like this on purpose for the maintenance revenue.

I checked with my dad before I made the cuts, he approved, and we agreed this would make that area more serviceable in the future.

The trailer winch is, essentially, done. Got to respool the line tighter so it doesn’t rub but, it’s ready to return home tonight.

Parents’ zero-turn is also almost ready to go home. Just need to bolt the seat brace on and purge the air from the hydro system and test/adjust.

I am looking forward to building forward momentum on the redburb.
