The RedBurb

Every Part Is Replaceable
What about aircraft paint stripper? The stuff you brush on. Does that work on automotive paint or would it be more hassle than it's worth.

I’ve seen people on IG do some stuff like that. Seems messy though lol

That style works great. Much better than a RO sander or hand sanding. Good media is a must.

I’m probably going to go for it when it comes time to paint the roof. My RO sander seems to do well enough for the rust spots at least, but for quick stripping of the paint this surface conditioning tool seems to make a lot of sense.

Red/black camo paint is done. Had just the right amount of sand paper and black primer.

The entire roof will get stripped down to bare metal again whenever I get around to “for real” painting it. But for now, this at least improves and protects the now non-existing surface rust, which was getting worse in this moist Florida climate.

Great work man. This stuff is a time suck, but worth the effort up front.

We installed a new printer this week. Tech said ideal operational humidity is minimum 30% ideally 50%. We were at 16%.

Happy New Year to you all.

Started the year off right by getting the new frame separated from the half ton axles and moved around front so I can start stripping it down.

Already have the fuel lines, brake lines, and what’s left of the wiring harness yanked off.

Also, I can’t remember if I’ve updated y’all on the build plan for this truck, but, life is necessitating a simpler build, which produces major changes. Things like:

- leaves instead of coilovers, and,
- 37s or 38s instead of 40s.

Don’t get me wrong: I want 40s and coilovers as much as anyone. But to build such a truck and build it cleanly requires time I simply don’t have. Heck, I’ll be lucky to even finish the truck at all.

When I built the Rusty truck the first time, I drove it 4,600 miles from Jacksonville to Moab and back … and had no complaints. It performed exceptionally well both on and off road. That formula included 37s and a 5” lift and the formula for the RedBurb will be similar.

Of all the iterations, it was also my favorite.

So the plan is pretty simple: cut off all the factory suspension brackets and engine crossmember, and swap in my fancy ORD stuff I saved from the last frame. This will allow me to loosely assemble the major parts of the truck using the factory springs and focus on other parts of the build.
Eventually, she’ll get ORD springs and some fancy shocks.

The engine will also get some attention.

Spent the last couple of days getting the factory engine crossmember swapped out for the ORD crossmember.

At first I assumed the frame side of the motor mounts were the same between the 350 and the 6.5. Technically, they are, but I did notice a difference in the lower bolt hole …

In reality, it probably makes no difference, but I did not want to risk finding out later undesirable changes in something like driveline angle, so I swapped in the diesel mounts from the old frame, since they’re in fine shape.

I also put my son to work pulling all the frame bolts for the brake lines …

He’s into it. Think we have a future builder on our hands.
