The restoration/modification of Daisy.

That will do just fine. If you ever need an extra wrenching hand just let me know I wouldn't mind driving across town to lend a brother a hand. And when your ready to sell them tires let me know. I will take those old one off your hands.

Will do man, I'm PM you. The tires are dry rotted and bounce a little but they're not balanced so that could be a part of it. They could run fine for years for all I know, they just aren't what I want. I've got 5 and the 5th one still has little tits on it, I'll be keeping that one for a spare.

And a beautiful front end it is.

You know I haven't really stared at it with the shocks mounted until today. The lower mounts look beefy hanging below the tubes a little. I wont have to worry about bumping those into rocks. I think I'm gonna take the bottom leaf out of the springs to soften the ride and lower her a hair. She's a little tall still, I hope the new tires will measure closer to 37" than these do as these look small under the truck. I prefer to have the fenders filled a little more, short lift, big tires. If I swap rear shackles and take the bottom leaf out of the front springs, she'll come down 1/2 to 3/4". Doesn't sound like much but should help. If the new tires prove too tall for a shorter setup I'll throw the leaf back in and add the EZ-inch to the rear that i just bought. I need to set up some bump stops too, looking at the Timbrens that Zimm is running on the Maiden. I've got visions in my head of mounting them on the end of a tube captured in an air bump mounting can welded to the frame. That way if I ever get ORD springs, I can go all the way and run air bumps as well.

I found these and was thinking of running these on mine with the same end game planned.

The more I looked at it, the less I liked the ride height. I prefer to keep things low and fill the fenders as much as possible. So today I decided to stop ****in around and do something about it. I replaced my 6" rear shackles with 4.5" ones from DIY4X, and removed the bottom leaf from both front springs. Some people say removing leaves is a bad idea, some say its just fine. I decided to give it a shot, even if the front springs start to sag they're getting replaced with ORD springs this coming winter/spring anyway. Removing the bottom leaf lowered the front 1/2" and the shackles lowered the rear about 3/4". It's not much but I'm happy, mostly because it rides much better. The rear shackle angle is better now and the rear feels softer because of it, the front is softer as well. There's a washboard section near my house with some dips and bumps in it, i can hit that whole section 10mph faster than i used to be able to.

Great work dude. I have pulled bottom leafs out before and noticed no ill effects. I didnt wheel it hard but i did flex it hard a bunch and never noticed a problem.

Sorry to hijack but are these the paint stripping discs you are using?

http://www.roarksupply.com/product-p/4.5cleanstrip.htm

yep. use discount code GRIT when you check out.

no hijack at all, its been quiet for a few days. ive got stuff to update with but ive been busy. the wife and i just got home from vacation. maybe this weekend i'll update the thread.

I have a stupid question...can I use these cleaner/stripper disc with my electric grinder...? I know nothing about automotive bodywork...

keep up the good work, keeps hope alive that I can start building mine before I die...:doah:

That's how I've been doing it, with a 4.5" grinder.

:waytogo::waytogo::waytogo:

just so happens I have one of those...:pimp:

Whenever it stops raining here I have some rough spots I need to fix. (on my burb)

Strip, clean, rough it up, piss coat of zinc chromate, fill prime & seal coat, then color coat..

does that sound about right...? :dunno::confused:

Sounds about right to me. I want my truck painted so badly but Ive found that I have zero patience for doing bodywork. Those wheels make stripping paint and primer fairly easy and quick and I still can't bring myself to go out to the garage and do it, maybe because it's 105° out there.

I really wish I had something interesting to update with. In the last two weeks or so, all I've done is drive the suburban to a local pizza joint once and crawl around underneath it with my father-in-law showing him what I've done. I'm only a couple weeks away from getting new tires for Daisy. My front hubs still need to be turned down a little bit more so my H2 wheels will fit over them though. When we had my hubs on the lathe the first time we cut down the outside diameter just far enough that the steel wheels would fit. I didn't realize that the aluminum wheels had a smaller inside diameter.

Also i bet the front will settle another 1/2" now.

i think she has settled a little more already, walking out of a movie theater, looking at her across the parking lot, she looks short now. i like it. friday night, making a left turn through an intersection the detroit waited til the 1-2 shift to lock up, made the loudest bang ive heard it make to date. when i got to the chinese restaurant i crawled around under it and nothing looked funny. i forgot how loud/unpredictable detroit lockers can be at times, haha! on the upside i love the bark i get from the tires when i turn, oh and traction, that too.

Scott check your spring bolt torque now that your driven and cycled the suspension some...I can't believe how fast things loosen up!
Nice flexing too!

I have a couple times now. I'm still obsessing over every noise, checking things out every time I park it.
