The Shop Truck

1971 Chevy C20 with a custom flat bed.
I honestly thought I had almost 48" between the tubes, when we slid the toolbox in I initially thought it wasn't going to fit, but it does.
In other news, I drained the catch can on the motorhome. It had about 10 oz of oil after 250 miles of driving. That's pretty excessive. I'm really not sure why it suddenly started blowing by so badly, my searches online are saying possible stuck oil rings, or a loose baffle on the oil breather port in the side of the block, or possible a HEUI high pressure oil leak causing atomization at high power levels. The engine runs and sounds great, so I don't think it's a broken piston or ring, but now I'm looking at losing about 1qt per 800 miles when I'm getting ready for 4000 miles of driving.
I'm going to do an oil change and add some HotShot's Stiction Eliminator before we leave and keep an eye on how much oil is blowing by. I'll also stop manually shifting on hill climbs to keep the RPMs down, I generally pull hills right below redline to keep the fan going full speed to help keep the engine cool. There's so many things that can go wrong on this trip, it's pretty stressful prepping for it.

We didn't do much yesterday outside of planning for the trip, but today I got out there and finished up a couple things I wanted to have done before we went to Firebird this Saturday. First on the list was hood pins. I'm not sure what speeds Chevy tested these trucks at, but the hood is pretty dynamic at 120mph. I've had the hood on the blazer pop up at 70ish, I didn't want to see what would happen at 130, so I added some hood pins. I actually bought these for the S-10 a few years ago, but could never figure out a good place to put them. They worked great in the Shop Truck. I just welded a couple tabs to the core support and got everything set up.

We drove the truck around a bit this weekend and my shoulder was killing me by the end of the day yesterday. I think something about the way I had to crawl in and out around the roll bar and steering wheel was making me use my arm in a way that I hadn't since the injury. To fix it, I put the removable hub back in. Unfortunately doing this makes my middle horn button useless, so I added a steering wheel button from Motion. The button feeds into an input on my Dominator so I can use the button for multiple things. I'm using my old "nitrous enable" button as a "race mode" button now, so when that is on the button is my 2 step, when it's off it's a horn. I may add other functionality to it later, like a scramble button if I'm going faster than 20mph, but this is good for now.

I need to swap on the small pulley and get some more e85 before this weekend, other than those things and swapping the wheels, we should be ready to go 10s.

Awesome truck build, just saw it for the first time, not sure how I missed it.

You can tell you have a lot of time in this thing, nice work.

One suggestion for safety, please put some padding on that bar behind your head. Usually that's a little lower than the top of the seat but I realize the window is also right there.

The truck is a major sleeper! :waytogo:

Looking good. Can't wait for Saturdays report.

As
the coach oil use, grungy oil control rings could be the issue.
10% trans or marvel oil and 30-50 mile drive followed by an oil change might help

I think you commented a few times back when it was on nitrous, but you haven't been in this thread for a while.
I didn't take a picture until this morning, but all the bars around my head have SFI rated padding per the NHRA rules.

You know I thought I remembered it but for some reason it was not on my watch list, which if I commented it should have been automatically put on and I know I didn't take it off so I am not sure what happened but its back on my radar now. :waytogo:

C7(?) What year? I can ask my Cat guys that work on my equipment if they have any ideas.
It's a 2006 Acert C7 Engine # WAX05411.

This is the next thing I am trying to address. We will be doing an oil change before we leave and adding 2 quarts of Hot Shot's Secret Original Stiction Eliminator. It says it takes 500-1000 miles of hard driving, so I'm hoping 4000 miles of pulling a trailer will fix the issue.
