THE STUBBY project / R.I.P . . . . . . . . . . .

what kind of dual tanks you plan on ?

stockers wont fit if you move the springs like I did . unless you custom hang them under the cab lower to clear the floor pan .

I am going for a 31 gal blazer tank my self if I cant make the 40 gal van tank fit easy I have already .

as for bed I have a reg old mass produced flatbed that I will cut down to the size I need . as its a bit chunky now and needs rework anyway .

I plan on using the stock tanks. My plan is to remove the bed and build a framework to hold them, using the stock mounts inside the frame work. They will be mounted side by side above the frame, centered. I'll retain the plastic "skids" from under them, and apply some reflective coating (like maybe some dynamat) to the "skids" to help keep the heat from the exhaust from affecting the tanks. The framework for the tanks will also form a bedcage, attaching to the frame via DIY4X 's frame/cage tie in kit (to avoid having the rigid bed cage directly attaching to the K30's flexy frame) Then, at the top pf the tank framework, I'll use DIY4X staked cage flanges so the actual upper rollover protection portion can be removed. The reason for making it removable is because the new bed floor will be atop the tank framework and I want to have the whole bed still be removable. (that way I can run bedcage only if going wheeling where body damage is likely) I will be cutting the bed floor out and building a flat floor at the wheelwell's height (to clear the tank holding framework), flanging it around the edges to allow it to be spotwelded to the inner bed walls and be seamsealed around the edges just like the stock bed floor was. That's the plan at least- chopping and cutting the stock bed to make it a 4'6" (inside length) bed with a flat raised floor.

wow all that work I would just do a new 31 gal blazer tank and empty sender and reuse your pump from old sender .

but hay up to you .

tanks on top of frame ( if I understand ) will make the bed so frigin high it will be a pita to get up/down with stuff .

I quite seriously thought about the Blazer tank but, I already have these duals so.... also, I am not to worried about hauling stuff with the K30, most that'll likely ride in the bed is some recovery gear and a cooler or two. Basically only doing a bed floor for two reasons:
1) to have a place to throw some little stuff
2) to have a better appearance (and a bit safer setup) than just strapping the tanks down in the bed
The Power Wagon gets hauling stuff duties:

any better pictures of how you did the rear end? Id like to see how it all looks there... with springs flipped, and 2wd hangers.. etc...
thanks!

so I have to tell the story on this old girl . . . .

she was a state dept of conservation truck in her early days . . then rust and age took hold and they sent here out to pasture . . .

I picked her up and started to breath new life in to her. . . that was until someone stripped her of here shoes and at that point I was heart broken .

next was leaving the place it was stored and worked on for bigger/ better things . so she got stuffed on the back burner for a bit . . . .

well the last half a year I have started to realize as we all are I am getting older and have to many projects I want to finish .

so at this point I think I have made up my mind and am going to part the truck out and spread the parts to my other projects to give them a good / better kick in the pants setup .

there will be almost nothing for sale and or scrap.

I even have a guy who wants frame and bare body local .

it pains me to scrap another project but it also makes me happy to spread its parts amongst the rest of the trucks to make each one a bit better in the end.

also its always in the back of my mind the bad trama the truck has had on it from the theft . . . bad carma I just not liking .

nothing set in stone yet but by spring its going to happen or not . time to think it over hard core since I have typed this out.

As sad as it is to see a truck/project go by the way side sometimes it's for the better. If the parts can be of better use on other rigs and they'll get finished, I say go that route. Fewer projects is better since you can focus more time/money on those few.

yesterday was the day she was pulled from her sleeping hole . . . .

now she is in line to enter the shop for part out . hope to do that in a week or so . finishing up a th400 reseal job for a friend and also have to fix a front suspension on a car for another friend . then in and strip fast since its all mocked up from before no real hold down or bolts tight .

BDS suspension / ord steering system = to older project truck to get rid of stiff springs from before I knew better .

built 1ton axles = new plow machine build up .

4l80/203-205 setup in storage for something .

motor open up and recheck stuff to make sure good after sitting so long . then sell or use in something .

rest of little parts soak up in projects as needed.

scrap the cab due to heavy rust in major structure areas and save the frame for just in case I find a good cab someday .

I am declining to like the above post, due to missing Stubby. But I like that it's helping other projects.

floors and cab structure gone .

and i have a few other projects to finish and this had just been rusting away for years .

also the whole project just had a few bad vib's with it in my mind that made me not want to finish it and be reminded of them .

as i said tho she will live on in other projects with her organs donated to them .

Its kind of funny that when I first found this site it was this truck that got me to thinking about DYI lifts for the rear. I had a c10 that I started my Black 77 with and saved the two wheel hangers from it...still haven't used them, but we are planning on using them on my kids 7de7.

I hope you post up pics of your buddys 63 build if it happens...that would be a sweet build!
Sad to see this truck go, but I see your point. Moving on is good!

frame was shortened 33" in the mid section . tail welded back on and now under my BUDGET BEATER along with the doubler . suspension going under my first true k30 . and the axles under PLOW MACHINE build along with the DIY4X dash .

she has lived on and donated a lot to other projects .
