The "under destruction builds" supersize75k5 's driveway of despair and repair

-44 is out of a conversion van that had been converted to 4x4, I have seen these brackets before, not sure if it was a Quigly or not but they are production fab brackets for sure.

Well I am changing my mind yet again... I pondered the 4 link up front, but long term I want a dana 60 and I also know i really love the radius arm design on my 07..

So back to leafs.

Couple of the issues I had with doing leafs with a 31.5 center pin to center pin measurement was that is would cause the front leaf brackets to sit inward a good 1/2" or more and it just looked funky.

Also the superduty springs I have are only going to net me a couple inches of lift compared to the 4" lift springs out back, this would lead to some adding a a leaf, zero rate, hanger or shackle bs and I was not liking the idea.

So I started thinking about a 52 inch rear k5 spring pack and running that instead of the super pooper springs.. well this then opened up my mind to sourcing some different spring and shackle mounts:pimp:

I have also seen where people use the front rear leaf hanger off of a k5 on the 88-98 trucks to hold the shackle and I have a k5 project in the back yard..

no dice though as my frame is a bit thicker and I would have had to chop them up to widen my center pin to center pin.. considered this.. then came across these aftermarket rear shackle hangers....

These will not run up and down as usual, tried and I would have to butcher these to to fit the bulge in the frame, with them turned 90 degrees they fit perfect:D

I think I will drill one more mounting hole for some variety if needed and brace the front most part that looks pretty unsupported when this is turned as I have it.

Now this is where it opened up then closed another set of worms.. the idea was to get a 31.5 center to center.. well these hangers are all wrong and gave me a 32.5 center to center.:doah:...but that number seemed all to familure... it is exactly what my frame is center to center up front:woot:

Being I am going to have to weld on perches anyways I did some quick measuring and it sits the perch perfectly right next to the casting for the center chunk and should work out beautifully :thumb:

Ordered up my perches from Kurt at diy4x as well as my front leaf spring hanger.

Jealous! That mini truck idea sounds legit. Will be watching, wonder if it would be feasible to rig on with Toyota running gear?

I am going to say no, it will be a tight squeeze with the drivetrain we have planned, a conventional set up would be a serious battle.

where did you find the rear shackle hangers?

Friend had them in his pile of old project parts, cant recall if they are a lowering or lifting application though or if they are a 2x4 or 4x4 or even for sure if they are for a chevy lol

Ill see if he knows what or where they came from.

Yayyyyy christmas after christmas:D

Got my parts for the 06 sas

diy4x, front shackle hangers and front perches.

Then got a drivers drop 32 spline 241, still need to round up a shifter.

And lastly since I have decided to go with 12 bolt h1 rims and 37 tires I picked up some spacers so they will work. Not sure what between all of my spacers I have everything form a 1.5 set and a 2" set on the 07 to a 2" an 3" set for the 06. I am going to try to use the 3" ones and if they look odd ill use the 2 inch spacers. At least this way I will have options and the 2" ones can always end up on the 07 or a future project.:pimp:

And now for the bad news..... ANOTHER TRANS :(

Under full throttle OD is slipping and reverse sounds like a a broken VCR and slips big time.
Not sure of my plan, I may just keep hammering it till it kills it off, park it for a while, maybe a powerglide, 400, manual... or a new stupid expensive 4l80e..no idea.

Just scrap the who automatic crap, i mean what is this number 10? just throw in a beefy sm 465 or the nv 4500.

I'd agree if it was not for the fact that the truck mainly gets used for the local mud bogs .. The nv4500 and the sm465 suck in the mud between the 2nd and 3rd shift.

If not for that there would be one in there by now :(

Hard to say, Ive always heard the TH400 and the 4L80E are comparable in strength. At least a Th400 would be cheaper when you kill it.

What about an allison retrofit?

Allisons are only rated up to 4500RPM due to their large input assembly. Shawn likes bouncing his 6.0 off the rev limiter too much. OTOH, no telling how long the Allison would tolerate those RPMs until somebody tries it. It wouldn't be a hard swap if you used a 2005 or earlier 5 speed. 06-up 6 speeds are a bit trickier due to the different controller, but who needs a .61 OD anyway?

I've lost track of all your mods/replacements, so I don't know what gearing you've got in your axles. I'm wondering if you think that going to lower axle gears would help your transmission at all?

The 07 with the dead trans already has 5.38 gears so no help there, for the 06 that I am doing 37's on I think I am going to go with 4.88's I think to keep the trans happy.

The trans in the 06 has a crap ton of miles on it soI am kind of hopping if its going to die that it takes a turd before I do this swap! If it does I will use a 30k mile motor, a new remanufactured gm trans and then bolt up the 241 with new motor and trans mounts. If not... Ill drive it till she croaks then go from there :D

I plan to start swapping in the next week or two if I can, the front tire on my 06 is going to hell from a bad tie rod in a serious hurry:popcorn:

are you planning to do the 06 on more of a budget? i wouldnt mind seeing how cheap you could do it but it still turn out right.

but your overkill so i know things are gonna change:laugh:

Actually yes for a change, I spent plenty of time and money on the 07 and for what my intentions are I will be doing this one different.:thumb:

The new buggy chassis just got picked up for me yesterday in Oklahoma so I wont be going crazy on this truck just yet. I know when the buggy chassis gets here I will be ready to go nuts on it:D

So far..
52" springs traded for
front spring rear brackets.. traded for
front hangers and perches from Diy4x ...70.00
front axle.. bought for 300 or so sold, then bought back for 100.00:haha: 200.00 profit lol
rear springs, 4" lift 63's ....50.00
32 spline 241 .....125.00
spacers, should end up with a just a few hundred in these.

I should be able to sell some of my ifs, the front 4.10 diff, stock driveline, my autotrack t-case, wheel and tires as well as my stock 63's and come out pretty good.

Would like to eventually consider 4 wheel air ride on this, or at least a rear set up:pimp:

Well toss another hundo on to the build, my dewalt grinder croaked, I seem to kill these like clock work every 2 years.

Made some progress after a quick trip to home depot. Still have a ton of grinding and cutting on the passenger rail to do and for motivations sake mocked up a tire.

Buy a Makita. I use mine every day and have had it for four or five years now. We use for everything from cleaning rust to sharpening shovels and mower blades to cutting tile.

I was not in the mood to research my choices and I was in the chop mode.. just bought another 10 amp dewalt and got back to work.

Anyone who knows me can tell you I abuse the hell out of my grinder, I toss it around, its been run over, left in the rain for days, stalled out on 3/4" thick plates over and over and I buy my cut off wheels 60 at a time...:grind:

I am going to take my old one and drop it off at dewalt, for around 50.00 they will rebuild it and then I can just have a separate grinder with a grinder wheel on it and not have to swap all the time. A grinder with a thin cut off wheel is easily my most useful tool:thumb:

I love running my right angle with 7' cutoff wheels... best boat shaft chopping tool eva...

the blade is about a 1/2" from the trigger.... freaks people out... :eek1: death machine, well a damn good amputation tool! :haha:

Haha I have one of the larger grinders, I think its a older craftsman or something I love the huge griner disk on it but its too slow for my liking and bulky.. I can not imagine a 7" wheel on my small one:eek1:
