The "under destruction builds" supersize75k5 's driveway of despair and repair

:D

Speaking of toys, decided to bite the bullet and not use my current reworked factory ls harness. I'll save it for a 6.0 s10 or some other future project or maybe I'll toss a ls motor in the back up bogger blazer project. "more on that later"

Anywho.. Called John at psi after getting a good referral and ordered it Saturday, well it shipped Monday and it's in my hands on wed! Wow.

First review of it looks nice, and maybe if I get jumpy I'll be able to fire it in an hour or two:pimp:

Had a ton of fun with the Sami, bent the dog**** out of the front axle but I can't figure out when or how that happened :pimp: I'm going to have fun finishing off this axle before I bolt in the new one with. Locker I bought this weekend :) also picked up a bumper and tossed on a m8000 I had collecting dust.

Also... Finally called up jakes performance in Texas, they specialize in the 4l80e. had a long talk with jake and ordered up a level five with a transbrake, 300m everything, lower gear set, billet torque converter and lots of other goodies. He is a few weeks out before i am on the build list sadly but I am super excited.!!

So I unloaded it, at 6000 rpms it would kind of move, then grab then rev, interesting.... Also found out I killed a brake line so that added to the excitement . Some how pealed a tire off the rim during all the rampless trailer unloading too. :(

Jake is a good guy, I used all his parts when I built my stage 5 4L80E with T-brake, he's good with TH400s as well. Are you changing gear ratios for the low gear?

And are the tires big enough in the sami that hitting the brakes in the air helped your nose high situation? Awesome.

Seriously, my favorite video on this thread is the one of you unloading your truck.

keep up the abuse.

Are you going to add power steering to the sami?

I am planning to, I used it to move my trailer and that was no fun with it hooked to the front receiver ! Only hick up is I have not found a set up yet that lets me keep the ac? I am new to the whole Sami thing so maybe after some calls I can sort that out or find a direction for it. I also can steer when I get stuck.

Yes on the lower gear set, going to use his trans brake that allows me to set it in any gear. I debated buying the parts too but most of my cores are pretty much a mystery so might as well get a known than start with junk. Still on the fence if I need the lower gear set, do you have it? Thoughts?

And on the tires, I've tried to tap the brakes to level it out but it just won't do it. I did add a winch and heavy bumper after the pic so maybe it will be different next time. So far I've been jumping the piss out of it:pimp: ..the state fair tuff truck coarse is on the first of November, but my truck won't be ready..maybe I'll take the Sami :eek1:

You ordered the transbrake for the truck! :woot:I thought about transbraking my truck but was afraid I'd end up with busted tcases, driveshafts, and lockers, axles, etc.

I don't have the lower gearset, the factory gearset is very strong, especially 2001 and newer when they made the gears 10% thicker from what they have been since 1964 in the TH400. I thought about it but since it is in my regal I was worried about traction with the lower 1st gear, the stock gear was fine with me. I wouldn't worry about it for strength, but if you actually want the lower gear go for it. Just make sure you get the good one, because in the drag community I've heard the cheap sets break easier than the stock unit. Like the original TCI units, although I think they have a newer 6 pinion units are better. I am sure Jake knows which one to use.

Have you used a tbrake before, probably? Thats going to be wicked, I predict more busted parts behind the tranny.

For anyone that doesn't know, they hit HARD! And since the tbrake is internal to the trans everything behind the trans is loose before it hits, unlike when you powerbrake and it and preloads the drivetrain and suspension which removes all slop. So when you hit the tbrake and release the footbrake the vehicle settles and allows slop in the entire drivetrain behind the trans and the suspension. Then you floor it and all the torque is absorbed by the converter (don't do this for more than a few seconds or you can overheat your tranny very rapidly). Once you release the brake it violently applies all that torque into the tcase or driveshaft for 2WD by releasing 3rd gear (the way the tranny works, 1st and 3rd use some of the same pieces as reverse, so by applying 3rd while in low you apply reverse, which essentially locks you in 1st, 3rd, and reverse at teh same time, locking it up solid, when you release 3rd, you also release reverse, leaving it in 1st gear only). It snaps you back in your seat violently if nothing breaks. Its more harsh than popping a clutch at high RPM I think, because when you pop the clutch it has to grab. With the tbrake the clutch has already grabbed, so there is no discernable delay, its immediate and its violent, and it feels awesome.

You just about scared me away from it now .i can see needing to upgrade my intermediate shaft and maybe having issues with the 205 out put now:doah:

Well, the T-brake comes with a stage 5, so you might as well get it, if you are worried about it, don't let the button go under power! But what fun would that be? :D :woot:

Also, if you release the tbrake in a higher gear it will transfer less torque to the case. As long as you keep that trans cool you shouldnt brake it, but I wouldn't be surprised if you break other stuff releasing the Tbrake.

You'll see what I mean the first time you press the button and let the foot brake go, the vehicle kind of settles, it's like the calm before the storm.

I wouldn't worry about the np205 till you start reaching over 1000hp. Mine held up fine. The intermediate shaft between the trans and tranfer-case could be a weak link.

I not going to read 2000 posts in this thread to find the answer, so I just going to ask--what size is the u-joints in your intermediate shaft?

It's a bastard shaft iirc, it is a stock slip yoke 32 spline coming out of the trans to the factory 1330 yoke on the ford case.

Looks like some driveline upgrades. One saving grace is the truck will break traction with mud on the tires or being on the loose dirt.

Well, I would change out the 1330 joint to at least a 1350.
Another thing I would do is put a brace on the back the transfer case. I saw a ford have one from the factory. It is probably is needed. I know you had trouble with your transfer-case cross-member before, and I think a brace would help with both the cross-member and u-joints. With the transfer-case rocking, it probably putting the u-joints out of phase angle wise, causing them to explode.
