The Wife's Dually - '82 K30 dually

I'm kind of trying to figure out my plan of attack for the paint progression. Any suggestions/ideas are welcome. Here was my general plan:
  1. Take the body off the 4wd dually (grey one), and blast and paint the frame. First part of that is done. Frame blast/paint is next.
  2. Remove the bed from the black dually and blast the interior and underside of it, then prime the underside, paint the underside black, and put bedliner in the interior of the bed.
  3. Gut the interior of the black dually.
  4. Remove the cab from the black dually, and blast the underside of it, then prime and paint it black.
  5. Use aircraft stripper to take the paint off the exterior of bed, cab, and the fenders. I'll have them all apart at this point, so I figured that might be the easiest time to do that. Just trying to figure out if I should go ahead and reassemble it before priming it, or just prime everything while it is apart.
  6. Reassemble.
  7. Bodywork (couple of small dents need bondo) including welding up some of the small holes from the tripod style mirrors and the hole in the roof where the cb antenna is currently residing.
  8. Shoot topcoat.
  9. Reassemble trim pieces.
Somewhere in there the drivetrain will need to get swapped onto the 4wd frame. I kind of figured I would do that after the bed and cab are on the 4wd frame, but before I put the front clip back to together. Should make that all considerably easier.

Both fuel tanks have lines running to what appears to be drain valve of some sort. I assume this maybe had to do with getting water out of the tank when this truck was a diesel. Do I need the lines that run to these valves, or is that something I can delete?

Can someone tell me what this contraption is? Looks like it's plumbed into the brake system and bolted to both the frame and axle, but I'm not sure what it is for.

Oh shit, I had a truck with one of those, That senses you weight or load your carrying and adjusts the brakes according to match the weight.

factory rear brake proportion valve . . . . most everyone ditches it .

and it you unbolt it and let it spin it can mess up the clocking and function of it . . .. if it even still works .

yes water drains for diesel tanks from factory .

So just take the main line from the master cylinder and patch it over to the T on the axle? Is there a part number for that piece of line by chance, or do I need to get something made?

Couldn't tell you what the part number is but yes the factory line for a non load sensing truck should work. Check out inline tube or classic tube for help, they should be able to set you up.

I have a 4" and just found the unloaded position which i believe is twisted counterclockwise and reinstalled the lever arm. still works the same I guess.

I'll see if the valve is causing any issues and if so I'll remove it. I may remove it anyway though to fit the exhaust. I was looking at potential routes for the pipes today and the level arm assembly is kind of in the way if I want to run pipes straight out the back.

That brings me to another question: What mufflers should I run on this truck? I'm leaning towards a Flowmaster Super 44 or Super 40 Delta. It looks like there is currently a single Super 40 on one side of the frame, but nothing on the other. I guess the PO scavenged the other one for another project. The one Super 40 that is on there turns down and dumps in between the frame rails at about the back edge of the fuel tanks. Doesn't look like there was ever a crossover pipe of any kind tying both sides together. The current Super 40 on there is an offset in, center out. Can't tell if it's a 2.5" or 3". Should I go 3" on this? Anyone know what size comes off the collectors on the Hedman Headers for BBC?

Sure... 3"

I got Hedmans duel 2.5 Pipes and Purple Hornies! Lol!

It kinda depends on where you live I think. I would not mention names or specifics when asking about it just so if you go a different route they aren't like "weren't you that guy we talked to". I did a cab swap when I was young in WI and I had both titles so I took both to the DMV and they combined them into one title under the body vin. Anything now days that I have done after that I just go off the body vin since no one even checks the frame vin unless it's a high dollar vehicle that could be stolen. I would see no problem with swapping a vin plate so that your vin and title are good for a body without a vin. I don't see the point in going through the whole lost title/no-title nonsense for just a new cab. Just make sure when you swap a vin plate it looks like you didn't.

:whistle::whistle: http://classicchambered.com/index.html

made on original tooling that made the orignals . . . old school muscle car exhaust sound . .
Have you heard these in person? So hard to tell what something sounds like from a computer speaker. I listened to the youtube clip of one of the old trucks and it almost sounded too loud. Then I found a clip of them on an '88 Chevy dually crew cab with a 454. Didn't sound too loud. I have 40 series on my K5 and they sound pretty good without being too obnoxiously loud. I figured on the 454 they would give me a little noise without being annoying. However, they do drone a bit at cruising speed. I wonder how much drone you get out of these classic chambered?

I have had a set years ago . loved them . they were on a 400sbc with basic headers and 2" duel's the sticks were med length .

they were very respectable just crusing around town . then open here up hard and she would BARK .

shorter = louder
longer = more mellow
smaller pipes = more crackle

I just talked with him today .

ordered a pair for a truck I am working on for a guy . . . and 1 for a xmas gift and 1 for my plow truck .

he is always making them and shipping all over the world . so he will have them when ready . .

So, I'm pretty sure my title says my original dually is an '81. Finally got the crud cleaned off the drivetrain a bit, and found this tag on the transfer case. I assume that is the date of manufacture? January 27, 1982?

I looked closer at all my titles. Here is the year breakdown:
1982: Grey Dually 4x4
1983: Red and White Dually with no bed
1984: Black dually.

After looking closer at the trim on the black dually it looks to be a GMC. I wish the grill was in a little better shape because I'd like to use that one, but the one from my grey dually is actually in better condition. I'm going to need to paint it though, so I'm trying to figure out if I should color match the grille to the body, or make either black or silver (or maybe silver with a black belt line in the middle). I can't really recall seeing any color matched grills on these trucks so I can't get my head around how that would look. Especially since the trim ring that goes around the grill is chrome. If anyone has color matched grill pics please post a few up.

I managed to get the motor, trans, and transfer case pulled yesterday. I got the fuel tanks yanked as well. I was surprised that the inside of them was really not in that bad of condition. There is some minimal surface rust on the walls of the tanks, but that's about it. Anyone have a good suggestion for a cleaning process? There is some "gunk" on the floor of the tank that looks like it could use a good cleaning. You obviously can't get a hand inside the tank to manually clean, so it would have to be a wash of some sort.

Just need to pull the steering box and tape up the ends of all the lines that I left on the frame and it will be ready for blast and paint.
