Thrillbilly Build Thread! 89' K5 on 44's, & tons. New motor FINALLY put in!!!

Hell ya! Thats a day that most of us still dream about! I bet its going to drive a **** ton better!

I dreamed for 6 years! Hopefully you don't wait that long, :doah: haha. I hope it drives better, then play in the wheel from 9 o'clock to nearly 3 with the old steering!

****! I have been dreaming of it for at least 10 years! Since before i was 16! Probably realistically been dreaming of a 60 since i was 14 and im 26 now! I remember being around 14 or so and wondering why my dad never put a 60 under his trucks.

dang man!!! I wonder the same thing about my dad too. He swears up and down that he never broke anything with 44's and 1/2 ton stuff. I won't ever know though, that truck is LOOOONNNG GONE...

LOL my dad bitched all the time about how much stuff he broke! I educated him just at the time he was done playing with trucks... He said he had blown countless u-joints, axle shafts, spider gears, etc. This was all in the front of his 73 3/4 ton suburban. He told me about how many th350 trannys he went through and when i asked about why he never put a th400 in it he said he was told it wouldnt fit... I can only imagine how much easier his life of trucks would have been if he had a 60 and th400 in that truck! :doah:

This was the truck. He abused the poo poo out of it! Thats for sure!

Ok sorry for hijacking your thread.

Naa bring em on, I love pictures! Haha yeah he got me into 4x4s but actually having one and living the nightmare of 1/2 tons and 44's made me get a 60/14! Now to see what breaks next!

Its not? Haha
Anyway, looks great! Next thing to replace is the stub shafts. They are the Achilles heel of that front end. I haven't wasted one yet but I bet if I play hard in it I'll soon destroy one Haha

Thanks man! Hopefully it doesn't break just sitting in the driveway cause then I got other problems haha. Gonna be awhile before I get to go see what it's made of!

After the 1ton swap, I'm at a standstill on where to go. There is so much I want to do and my mind constantly races with ideas for this thing. I want everything from greasable bushings to building a motor, new gauges to swapping the 700 out for a NV4500... Hyrdaulic assist should be next but I can never settle.

After your 1 ton swap what upgrades came next on you guys' builds???

With 44's I think hydro assist would be a great "next upgrade". Turning those tires with out it must be lots o fun :D, it's not a huge expense or an overly complicated project so that's my vote.

Yeah that upgrade always seems to come to mind first when I start running through my list of to-do's. As long as I'm moving the steering is perfectly fine. Haha! Is it better to just buy a kit or use rescources to put one of your own together and run risks of something not functioning properly?

I built my own, did the surplus center ram, built my own mounts , DIY ported cap, tapped the box top and made my own lines (I have fittings and hose for my equipment for work). It works great, I still need to mod the pump, but even without it you can literally steer the wide 38's I have with one finger on the trail.

Since I'm a noob at hydro assist, what size ram would I need? And when you say mod the pump are you just talking about adding the additional rubber for fluid capacity or am I missing something else?
