Thrillbilly Build Thread! 89' K5 on 44's, & tons. New motor FINALLY put in!!!

Well this wasn't in the plans but I couldn't pass up a good deal!











350 bored .30 over cross hatched with speed pro .125 dome top pistons. brand new cam, main, and rod bearings, all balanced ready to roll! needless to say I haven't got any sleep the past few days cause I'm up thinking of the day I can put it together!
 
I forgot to list the specs of the heads and cam that will be going with the motor.

Heads: Pro Comp aluminum angle plug, 190cc runner, 64cc chamber, 2.02 / 1.60 valves.

Cam: Howards hydraulic flat tappet
301/301adv./248/[email protected]/[email protected]:1lift/110* lobe

What you guys think of that setup with the 355? It's gonna be high revving for sure but its a mud truck and what mud truck doesn't throw the hammer down?!?! I need some feedback fellas!
 
While waiting on the rest of the parts to roll in for the motor, I decided to go ahead and tinker on some other things. I ripped out all the AC system since I'm planning on running the intake inside the cab, cut the fangs off the fenders and removed the inners to prepare to remove the front clip when motor install time rolls around.

















And while cleaning up the firewall I slipped off the dang tire and ripped the valve stem out of the wheel...:doah: it gave me an excuse to put a metal one in to match the rest!

Haha that was me! Thanks to that happening and being a 16.5 wheel it was fun trying to seat the bead... it gave me a chance to get some practice in with the ether and torch though! :whistle:
 
What are your plans for the frame? Are you planning on boxing and bracing?

Frame has been repaired at the gearbox. Have a few other places that need some attention in the rear section of the frame. Haven't really drawn anything up yet though. Always got my mind elsewhere lol.
 
It's been awhile since I've posted any update to the ole' build thread but after months of gathering parts and waiting patiently for a few free days I was finally able to get the new motor put in along with some other works to the mud truck.

One of the last pieces I needed. I helped a buddy going through some back problems work on his street truck and gave me this for payment. Holley 750 DP:



driving it over to the shop to put the motor in. The last time this truck will ever be driven on the street... Kind of a somber moment for me. Haha:



Pulled the front clip off to make it easier to work on this monstrosity. At this point I started to finish removing anything on the firewall that wasn't going to be needed in the mud:



Got the old tired 350 TBI out:

after a couple of days of mocking up a fan, and running some heat up cool down cycles I'm ready to hop off in a mud hole and see what I can tear up!:

In the other works going on we cut out the original dash and building a plain Jane cut to the chase dash for gauges, switches, and a nice dry place to mount the MSD box and coil:



Test fit Obviously done before all the wiring and ECM was removed and was a dumping place for crap I didn't want sitting in my garage floor lol:

I don't want to put any more wear and tear on it. I already do enough of that in the mud. :whistle: The real reason is it's just a straight up mud truck. There is no place to "legally" take it to mud remotely close so trailering it was the only option I seen reasonable. We completely gutted it also. No wiring ran for lights, turn signals, no fuse block etc. The only light were gonna have is a light bar mounted in the grill. The KC lights up top are just for the "old school" look and quit working awhile ago. In the next few years Rockwell's, coil-overs, linked, and tractor tires will be put in place of the running gear now. I'll still drive it through the neighborhood though to irritate the neighbors with open headers...:haha:

I truly like trailering my rig to the trail more than driving it to the trail before. Yes there are draw backs either way, but I have just as much fun trailering my rig through town and seeing everyones face as I drive by them :D. Yes it takes a little more time and energy with a trailer, but I notice that I have less fear of beating on my rig more knowing I can just put it on a trailer and drive home if it breaks.
