tick tick tick... knock knock knock... KNOCK KNOCK SQUUUUUEEEEEEEEAL

I got 1 i give you thats a gm long block engine . . But to far to ship it and it looks like the titanic as it was pulled from my old plow truck .

Sucks tho all that work and zero life span .

I should see if there is a way to post audio clips.
New years eve in the desert, a clicketty clacketty sound appeared somewhere in the engine. Hmmmm what could that be??
Drove it a few miles and kept the RPMS down.
New years day, and the sound was more of a tapping/slight knock. i drove around in a circle while a few friends listened. couldnt tell- maybe a bearing going... 145 miles to get home from there.
I almost left it in friend's yard and hitched a ride home.
after weighing some options, i decided to drive it, and try to drive like a grandma with tiny feet.

It made it home, and the sound was a little more pronounced. I would have parked it, but someone stole the cats out of my other truck, and its stuck at the dealership.

So, i drove it 8 miles to work the next day, and 7 miles back to my friends place- listened to it in his driveway... odd. couldnt pinpoint it. moved on and stopped at another friends house, and theeeeen...

i had just reached in and blipped the throttle with my hand - maybe 2200 rpm?
the sound gets to be a louder rapping just as the pedal lifts and right before the drop in rpm...
quiet for a second, and then settles in to a light knock knock knock...
no drop in oil pressure and no idle surging with the sound. motor appears to be running great- just that sound!

and then... as we are both standing next to the motor, it sounded like a terracotta pot was dropped inside the engine. and THENNNN, crunching sounds like a couple of coke cans were being twisted and squashed...

and THEN sounded like those coke cans were being pulled apart and shredded, right before being forced through very small places at thousands of PSI.

THEN immediate squealing and the idle got rough and dropped several hundred RPM. I shut it off and as we pushed it onto the street, my buddy's wife offered to split dinner another way. Beer, Cigars, DONE.

Damn that sucks. I just put a rebuilt 350 TBI in one of my rigs. Was a little worried I had a lifter tick but it went away after some adjustment.

Where did you get your engine and does it have any warranty?

nah - warranty shwarranty.

hard to complain for 400 bucks-most people seem to want 1500 bucks for condition unknown.

was a worthy gamble with 120K on it, and had great oil pressure and compression right up to the end.
it allowed me to pull my engine out intact, and get the truck smogged and tagged again.

I was gonna say rod #5, but sounds like something else let go

kept oil pressure until it locked up?

Well I feel your pain. I'm on engine #6 on my 87 K5. Some I was not happy with, some went bad due to mistakes.
stock 350 - needs more power!
built 383 - lost due to oil pick up tube falling out and no gauge
used 454 - lost its bearings, probably due to improper cleaning of block/heads
crate 454- Horrible power, 190hp at the wheels due to shitty heads
built 496 - great power, lost in Moab due to bad machine work
built 406 - so far so good... knock on wood...

These days I prefer to have a GOOD machine shop build my short blocks since they measure and double check all the tolerances and make sure things are within spec including magnaflux the block along with line bore. Any time I have tried to skimp on good machine work costs, it always bites me in the ass. For example the cheap machine shop I had build my 496. They really screwed it up and it lost all its bearings and damaged the high end crank.

which shop was this?

which shop was this?
Western engine. Should have went to Colorado Custom Cylinder Heads or theres a few others up North. Geddes in the springs is good too.

Always like making sure the locals don't get involved with those questionable shops

the initial few days of ticking/knocking made no difference to the oil pressure or the way it ran. idled smooth! -oil pressure was great- low 30s at idle, and would come up to mid 40s at higher rpm ranges.

even after the insides started coming apart in the driveway, the truck was still running, but having a hard time idling, was loping and stumbling, and had that nice metal on metal screeching from hell, and it still had 20-ish psi of oil pressure. I shut it off before something could come loose and out the side of the block - did not want a huge mess in my friend's driveway!

also, stopping it there -I had hoped to save it's last breath in case it needs to die helping itself on to a trailer...

funny thing is: its still in front of my buddy's house. he had to move it for street sweeping this morning, and he said it started and idled like normal??? It was quiet- no knocking and screeching like the other night - WTF?
He said he was afraid to rev it up, and just used the low gear and let the truck idle up onto the lawn until the street sweeper was gone, and then later idled back out onto the street with no problems. weird.

AHHHHHHHHH!!! thats what killed the first engine in mine! going down a long sandy hill that was so steep that teh back end would come around if you let off the gas - cant roll down that hill - have to DRIVE down it, and alternate on getting on the brakes when possible to try and slow down a little as best you can...

I lost oil pressure just as I crested the top and passed the point of no return. I had no choice but to keep driving to the bottom. got oil pressure back when the truck was level, but it was already knocking. one Broken and one loose/slightly bent rear main bolt. the rear cap was wiggling around and knocking.

ALL MY PICK UP TUBES GET WELDED TO THE PUMP BODY FROM THEN ON

Well if there’s shit in the oil filter, that’s a clue. Makes me wonder what else you were hearing

That's kinda creepy. Like Christine creepy. Get it home, pull the oil filter see what's in there and maybe get one of those small flexible cameras for your cellphone. Either that or just pull the engine and start your rebuild while it might still be salvageable. Reconditioned crank at Vatozone for sbc400 is 350 right now. Rockauto was out of stock. TBI350 might be different. It sounds like a bearing locked up, partially shrapnelled, and then decided to start working again. In which case, that's not exactly good for longevity.
