tick tick tick... knock knock knock... KNOCK KNOCK SQUUUUUEEEEEEEEAL

i moved it for street sweeping a few days ago- off the street and onto my buddy's lawn. (his wife loves having a big blue ugly Chevy dominating her front yard)

it was quite and idled great- i never got the rpms over say 2000, and once it was up there in the grass, i let it run for a few min. Gradually as the engine started warming up... a faint thunk thunk thunk thunk thunk thunks started. about the time the engine would be warm enough for the temp sensor to kick the computer out of bed, it was a solid knocking sound again.

cant wait to tear into that one to see what went wrong. I wonder which bearing would be more temperature sensitive after spinning and being damaged?

whatever it is is nice and quiet when the engine is cold.

moved it back over to the apartment this weekend. My buddy said the boss was tired of seeing it on the lawn every Wednesday, and tired of always parking her jeep behind it every afternoon... gotta keep the boss happy lol. I was afraid to rev it up, so I had my buddy tow me down the street with his super duty while I had it idling in neutral so I could steer and brake. The 30 foot strap is much more pleasant that the old 20 footers I remember using!

It idled ok, but I did hear some crunching sounds over the 1.25 mile trip. still cant pinpoint the sounds - anybody's guess at this point! going to be 2-3 weeks before i can really dig into it. Sorting out my other motor right now, but, i will prob cut the oil filter and see what treasure is in there, and then pull the pan and look around before scheduling a day to yank the knock/squeeler.

will report back

my buddy just had a busted flexplate come in the shop knocking so bad a lot of the guys said motor . . . check it out you never know .

My dad thought he had a knock in his 97 S10, turned out the transmission shop didn't use loctite on the torque converter bolts and they backed off .

We had a duramax come in with what was consistent with a rod nock. Upon further inspection the crank split at one of the rod journals and the break was on just the right angle that it allowed to keep spinning without coming apart.

weeeeeelll prob not going to put too much thought in the flexplate (sm465 :pimp:),

but who knows- could end up being a destroyed clutch, loose flywheel, bearing come apart in the front end of the tranny? a few times, I swore I could feel it in the clutch pedal as I let it out... but all the other times NOPE!

friend had a 454 bbc he got years ago like that also .

Been sitting on a stand for a couple years, and It’s been a running joke with some friends on how long it would take for me to crack this thing open and find out What happened to it…
I don’t have it in front of me at the moment, but it was the rearmost rod - is that #7 or #8 ?? Gotta be number 8

Rod bearing spun and actually doubled up inside the cap. Ground the crank down and crank is trash, rod is trash- heck, IF the block is rebuildable, all the pile of parts that I could reuse is basically just a block, tins, and maybe a set of stock heads for my next tbi replacement? Cam and lifters looked brand new, but this is a roller compatible block and I wouldn’t run a standard cam anyway

8 is the last journal.

Yep go roller
I’m sitting on a few sets of good used origional spiders, dog bones, and cam retention plates. Happy with the B-body lt1 cam that’s in the truck now (basically a billet version of the vortec 350 cam) would probably do something similar when/ If I build the next one

found a video while trying to clean out my phone - this was the used running suburban motor that i tossed in the blazer as a 400 dollar gamble. got one desert trip and about 6500 miles out of it before it started knocking. video was from the fall of 2022 right before I yanked the motor out.
