Top secret build plans exposed!!!! (tons of pics)

Damn dude, you are doing exactly what I have planned for the finality of my truck.....:bow::bow::bow: I wanna see her when she's done. That truck is completely sick!

~Brian

i was going to do some what of the same thing to a '90 2wd toyota pick-up that i have but, now i see how bad a$$ it looks on a K5 i might just sell the toyota and do it with my '85 K5. Dont know what i was thinking when i got the idea to 4-link some Dana 60s under a toyota when i have a k5 with a 10-bolt under it lol.

LOOKS SWEET!!!!

Man, very nice set up you have going there   !!

What steering arm/cross over steering set up do you have? I'm about ready to order mine but I'm doing some last minute pondering :D !

She won't be called brown betty anymore when I'm done. Once we cut off the roof and put on the new half doors she will be due for a paint job and I don't think I'll stick with brown lol. Probably a silver color with some kind of a metallic blue stripe that matches the blue of the coilovers. Then a gunmetal grey for all the bumpers, rollcage etc. The mastercraft seats that I ordered are a 2 tone grey pattern as well. I think the color combo should look really sharp when she's all finished.

What's gonna look pretty cool as well is when we tie the bumpers into the fenders into the boatsiding. The tubes you see bent for flares will be welded directly onto the bumpers half under the sheetmetal. This way they will stick out 3/4" past the body somewhat acting as a low profile exo-cage.

It was really important to me to keep the fullsize look of the truck. I was pretty worried because of how much I had to hack to fit the 42's with the axles pushed so far out, (rear axle back 10" and front forward 3.5") but it ended up being easily distinguished as a k5 and I have almost nothing for low hanging sheetmetal to be snagged on a rock.

Final ride height is about 5" over stock height.

For beadlocks I will be using Stauns internal beadlocks. I wanted to use a dual lock but still keep my rotating mass fairly low (considering I have 42's lol) so that made the H1's out of the question. The H2 rims were lightweight and I got them for only $100 per rim. I was quoted $1200cnd for the stauns installed. Not bad considering that I get a dual lock set-up that is street legal. I'm not sure if your planning to do any high speed stuff with your truck but the less weight you can keep down there the better.

My steering set up is all PSC for the box, pump, ram etc. and the crossover reverse highsteer stuff is all NWF. Their steering arms are great. One thing to look at with whoever you end up choosing is whether or not the kingpin caps are a part of the steering arm or not. On these ones the cap and arm are all one piece which I definitely prefer. Drives the price up slightly but worth it imho. Also if you are considering highsteer look into the reverse high-steer. I am super stoked at the location of my tie rod. There is no way that thing will be smacked on a rock now. It just comes down to whether or not you have the room to mount it back there or not.

Thanks for the excellent info  !

In regards to kingpin caps: Not all steering arms are part of the cap?

Is your tie rod going to be mounted in front of the drag link or behind? The reason I ask is because I've been eyeing the Poison Spyder high steering set up where the tie rod is behind the drag link and front axle. However, I noticed the engine crossmember is RIGHT there where the tie rod would go! I going to check out NWF.

ha ha do it. don't even think about it just do it. Toys are sweet but K5's are sweeter. Just think of how big of an engine you can put into a k5 :D Plus the challenge of navigating a full-size through the trails is fun in itself. We are already pondering the rear steer set-up to ease manueverability (sp?) on the trail.

The other thing that is just awesome about this build for me is the fact that it will be completely street legal here when I'm done. :D

Everything about this build is simply massive too. You guys should see just how huge all the links are. Each one can withstand twice the weight of the vehicle applied to it before bending. Upgraded everything I could along the drivetrain. 32 spline t-cases, 1410 d-shafts, chromo shafts. I built this truck with the thought in mind of competing in the TTC. Everything had to be bomb proof.

Another very cool thing is how low we are managing to keep all the weight on the vehicle. The batteries will all be mounted in the rear under the floor similar to Rene's. When I had to relocate the fuel tank rather than place it up high in the bed I customed designed one that fit forward of the rear axle on the underside of the truck still. The truck should stay very stable during off camber playing.

My draglink will be staying in front of the axle but my tie rod is behind it now. Take a look at the pic of my front axle from the side and it will give you a good idea of what the finished set-up will look like. Just picture the panhard as the draglink.

I also had engine crossmember interference but I think that was mostly due to the panhard and the fact that the axle was moved so far ahead.

And yes some of the companies offer a two piece steering arm where the cap is separate. These are solid billet pieces. Stronger better design.

do you have any pics of how it will sit at ride height with the tires on? looks killer

No I forgot to snap off pics of that. I also forgot to get the pics of it when we were flexing it out.

Unfortunately with how busy work keeps me I don't get to see it as often as I would like but the next time I head out there I will try and get some of those pics.

that would be great, im plannin on 42's with about 6" lift or so and wanna see how they fit in there with that littl lift

If your not afraid of the sawzall you will be fine. You'll also probably end up tubbing the rear or you will most likely rub on your inner fenders. You could always limit your uptravel to prevent that though and set it up for more droop if you would rather not hack. I plan on jumping it so I opted for a little more compression than you might need.

yea im not planning on jumping it haha. it will actually probably be closer to 7" lift. im wanting to keep it close to street legal, so tubing the rear isnt really an option.....yet

:D I don't sell drugs, the drugs sell themselves lol.

No seriously rene had it right, I work for precision drilling. We do oil/gas exploration for the big companies (shell, conoco, etc) I break my body for them and they cut me a half decent check. I work 12 hour days for literally weeks straight with no time off. the overtime is where its at.

I read/heard somebody make some comment about you "being out in the bush" and missing BB06. That was the other reason I curious. I thought maybe you were some extreme backcountry guide or something. :haha:

Sounds like you're doing some of the work yourself too - which helps.

At least I got to see the Brown Betty before its big transformation into....

So is it going to be appearing at BB07?

I missed BB06 too, but we'll be there for BB07!

BTW, your pics are giving me ideas!

BB'07 X2   !!!

Max,

Good to see it coming together..... I know you've been planning this for a while....!

502 BB....... mmmmmm!

well I feel better, just payed 125 for 4 h2 rims:woot:

I am torn on the internal bead locks, also the h2 wheels chip up real bad, but I can say from seeing 2 people run them that they have not failed.

I also went with high steer, and the non cap style steering arms, I did not have the room for rear steer though, hell it hits even where it is so im back to the drawing board!

me and some friends had a semi-serious conversation about doing a cross-country roadtrip to BB '07. a buddy has a trailer, so we'd just alternate towing duty, one rig on the trailer, one rig towing the trailer and then switch and let the other rig take a break :D im pretty sure we'd be some of the only few east coast homies there.

MuddyBuddy I didn't mean tubing the rear end but tubbing the rear end. Basically just enlarging the inner wheelwell so you don't rub the tires on everything under full compression. I'm sure someone has some pics of what I mean.

Yeah she'll be at the BB this year. I was pretty bummed that I missed this year and almost flew down anyways without the truck just to be there but decided the money would be better spent on the truck instead. Not to sure on what the truck will be called by then though... I think I'll probably hold a contest on here to see who can come up with the best name for her.

Supersize the cheap rims makes the chipping almost a non issue. If it ever comes to the point where the rim chips bad enough new h2 rims are a dime a dozen. Well almost lol.

To everyone else thanks for the positive comments. I can't wait to drive her. Shooting for around march/april.

On a side note I decided to start up Max's extreme offroad recovery business. My entire build up has just become a tax write off  :D

Now how's that for a sweet loophole..
