Tow rig upgrade and trailer purchase ideas

Another question, I just measured my k5 from outside to outside of both wheels and its about 7 feet wide. So do i need to get an extra wide trailer to avoid harrassment or is having the wheels stick out a little cool with the CHP. Also is it unsafe to have the vehicle stickin off the side a little. Seems like it would be but :dunno:

My wheels stick over the edge on my trailer. Proper tie downs used in a criss cross pattern will keep it from moving around.

Problem with most non deck over trailers is the fact that you need to drive over at least one fender to get your truck loaded. So the fenders either need to be strong or easily removable.

Sometimes you can squeeze through the fenders but be careful had a fender come off because I pushed them both out. It didn't come completely off but enough to make two flat tires happen within about 2 seconds of each other.

Which in turn took out most of the fender.

This deal has been floatin around cl since i started my search. Looks like its built to haul 4 wheelers but i dont know if its built properly or not and i dont know if its stolen or not since its not registered. For 1000 bucks though if its in good shape its not a terrible deal.

It needs new tires as stated, And i would assume at that price electric brakes as well.

No. I'm going to bet that your K5 is wider and heavier than that Heep. Even after you strip it down.

I know you want to keep your trailer as light as possible, but you are going to over weight in a heartbeat with a 7k trailer.

I measured from the outside of both wheels and got about 7 feet. So 90 inches would cover me. Just worried about it being built poorly or stolen.payload is also a problem as you stated.

I didn't read the whole thread, but just so you know in case it hasn't been said. An 18ft car trailer set up as you described is gonna weigh in almost 2500lb. I just weighed mine Thursday and it weighed 2440lbs. It's 18ft, wood floor, elec. brakes on both axles, 3500lb axles, Smittybuilt XRC8 winch, battery, chains, aluminum truck box, and ramps. That leaves a payload of 4560lbs. I also weighed the crew cab, it weighed 5700lbs.

So you suggest a heavier trailer? Im seriously considering building my own trailer at this point. I need to make a material list and a realistic price. If it can be done for under 1800 i see no reason not to. I need more fab experience anyways. Its less than ideal but i've been scouring ck5,norcalbigdawgs,pirate4x4 and cl for a few weeks now and everytime i find something that could work its sold or ends up to have some other major problem. Will continue to keep an eye out as well as work out a qoute for a build.

i think he's telling you his whole kit weighs 8,140 pounds.........1,140 pounds over the cap for his trailer......imagine that behind a K5 going down the road?

i sure hope that your state requires an inspection for a home built trailer, that's a good undertaking to "practice" fab skills on.

I think he's saying that a trailer big enough to take the weight is gonna put you over the k5's capacity

It's more than I'm comfortable with and I have a '90 Suburban with 3/4 ton axles and springs. I'm looking for a diesel to tow with.

My step dad is a master machinist with 30 years of experience in that experience he spent quite a while in charge of quality control at a fab shop, All welds would be properly inspected of course. My grandpa who is helping me used to race motorcycles and has years and years of welding experience including a few trailers built and repaired. Im all about safety :waytogo:.

A tow rig project may be coming sooner than expected. Since i had to let my last suburban go to the wreckers as heartwrenching as that was i learned alot about taking on realistic projects and what projects REALLY COST and i can now tell you its nowhere near the 1000 dollars it cost to buy :haha:. I've been thinking about ideas for my next suburban aka tow rig and i have at least one idea im fairly confident has never been done as well as a few that have but are still focking awesome (duallys :woot:) and a few i will have to talk to the ck5 brotherhood about because their application could be a little sketch under heavy load.

Unfortunately im not seeing any awesome deals on 80s suburbans right now and i cant stand the look and wuss factor of sheet metal rigs, but im keeping my eye out and i got a fair sum of cash from living frugally as posted earlier in the thread and working full time (9.50 an hour adds up ). Dad decided to kick 500 towards the trailer purchase so with my budget around 1300 i got a 1800 budget now which helps quite a bit.

Basically i got such a hard on for suburbans since i let my last girl go i dont think ill be able to resist the idea of turning all these ideas flying around my head into reality to let the 73 k5 tow much. Only reason i need to pick up a trailer first is because i want to my put 76 k5 on green sticker so i dont need to pay insurance on it anymore and i cant leave it on the street green stickered and i have to move it to the new house in hollister.

Btw cali guys it seems like i can put the k5 on some kind of combined green sticker/non op deal so i dont need to pay insurance on it and barely any reg (think its like 50 every 2 years). Anyone know anything about that? posted that question in my 76 k5 thread but no replies yet.

thanks for posting this. it's really nice to see some honesty coupled with intelligence and responsibility. on paper a 3/4 ton might could do it, but paper don't push you all over the road and make your a55 pucker up .

that was when it was only going to weigh in at 7K.

put your money on this. kill 2 birds with one stone. then rent a trailer to move your 76 to the new location. By the way I built a 16' 4 place quad trailer recently. I had $1000 in it and I already had the axles main part of the frame and tougne. It'll probably be cheaper to buy one:dunno:. go to www.racingjunk.com .

from all i can gather and remember through all this, the '76 is registered.....why he can't drive it there and pull the plates i don't know.

that dually Sub is sweet too.
