Tow rig upgrade and trailer purchase ideas

the idea is to make the 76 non street legal. its already not plated and wouldnt be worth the effort of getting it road legal (same boat with my 81, gotta love cal smog)

the 73 is smog exempt and neither one will be worth in a sale what they'd be in sentimental value to keep.

plus keeping the 76 street legal would limit the ability to go more and more offroad only, like full locked, less body work, better susp. etc.

thats the current update. now burbans are making a big push back to the forefront which would be better.

ok...i thought the 76 had a plate and he wanted to take it off so he could get another truck. i thought he said his father wouldn't insure another unless he took one off . he just bought new tires for it too. actually i can't keep track of all this........ha ha.

yeah, thats why getting rid of the plate/insurance to get it under a green sticker/ohv tag. he's selling the new tires to go up in size.

76 is due for smog and reg as of a few days ago and also my dad wont insure my tow rig until i take the 76 off which makes sense to put it on green sticker with current plans. I already sold the tires used for more than i bought em for new 3 months ago :waytogo: .

Exactly and tires are already sold :) for a profit to.

Kind of a hijack but not.

Now that he has looked at and thought of burbs. What can you tow with a burb. I want to do this also with an 88 1/2 ton. But I cant for the life of me get an acurate tow rating.. I've seen everything from 5k to 9k :dunno:

Northern tool also has decent kits for trailer brakes. Not sure if thier prices are good though.

5500-6000lbs. It's what I feel is safe with a 1/2 ton burb. I've spent many miles in the passenger seat of a 1/2 burb pulling a 6500lb+ 27ft enclosed trailer and it was too much.

It's the rear springs that are the problem, more than anything else including the rear axle. They are just too spongy. Towing more than 6K and I'd start to be concerned of longevity of the rear end, transmission, u joints, integrity of rear springs, etc.

Dad is saying because it has a hydraulic ram tilt set up it has 2 seperate frames which are going to increase weight and decrease payload and highly recommends against it. Thoughts on this?
More than likely that is right. You don't want a tilt trailer anyway.

So you suggest a heavier trailer? Im seriously considering building my own trailer at this point. I need to make a material list and a realistic price. If it can be done for under 1800 i see no reason not to. I need more fab experience anyways. Its less than ideal but i've been scouring ck5,norcalbigdawgs,pirate4x4 and cl for a few weeks now and everytime i find something that could work its sold or ends up to have some other major problem. Will continue to keep an eye out as well as work out a qoute for a build.

Building your own trailer is a big job and you need to know what you are dealing with. You need to get everything absolutely square or you get a trailer that doesn't pull strait best case, and one that wears out tires worst case.

I am currently in the middle of building a 30ft beaver tail gooseneck trailer with tandem 10K axles. It's a big job, trust me.

If you really want a trailer custom built and are serious, I could give you a price on building a trailer for you to your exact specs.:thumb:

Not too shabby man. Gotta love craigslist
I actually had them listed on ck5,pirate4x4 and norcal. Sold them off pirate4x4 to a guy in concord a week. Was a pretty cool dude working a DD/jeep project i got to check out a little bit.

Im not ready to give up my secret plans yet. But i got some shet coming for when i do pick up a suburban that is going to make it IMO the coolest budget tow rig in existance. That is all :D

oh and if you can build me a 20' 10k trailer with tandem electric brake axles and 84'' between fenders for 1800 bucks ill buy it :haha:

Making a call list

If they will spring for 2k im thinkin ill take this home. About 340 in gas to get down there in the heep and back in both vehicles.Gonna have dad put 500 towards the burb instead of the trailer so this will set me back a bit. Its all ready to go though so i would tow with it as is until i get ready to do out of state trips.

Sweet trailer deal looks like i need to act fast to make it work so its probably a scam of some sorts,Possibly stolen.

Hate the thought of a IFS front but at the tune of 1500 i could like it if its a 3/4 ton which i would assume they wouldnt put a BBC in a half ton :dunno:

Somethin to call on,If its got trailer brakes its mine. If not it probably still is, Sweet lookin deal.

Well the tow rig is here but the trailer is not so i guess threads alive again.

A 400 dollar heavy duty trailer  , Is it too good to be true? Lets hope not because after what the burb cost me i could really use a deal :doah: . If its got current reg. Ill probably go pick it up ASAP. Add some drive over fenders, mod on some e-brakes and call it good :dunno:

id say go look. you never find em that cheap.

Talked to him,Its frame is 4'' I-BEAM,Doesnt know the axles rating but hes towed all his trucks, cars and backhoes on it and it has no electric brakes, Hell at that price i can scrap it and almost break even lol. Sounded like a real old honest guy, Was very straight up so im fairly confident that its not stolen. Strangely enough he said no cop ever pulled him over for towing with it on the street even though it has no plates . Guess ill schedule a meeting for sunday.
