I've used boiled linseed oil, Thompson's, oil based paint, random stain, etc over the years. I prefer wood decks because I put screws in them to hold blocking.
My grandparents all used petroleum based products. Oil, diesel, kerosene, etc. All worked well on hardwood, largely pointless on softwoods.
Boiled linseed oil works the best. It lasts about two years. The first month after putting it on it is a slippery-sticky consistency that leaves a mess.
Once there are cracks in the wood, you really need to use something to keep water out of the cracks. Paint works, but only for a few years.
