Train Horn installed!

Quick update -

I got my new valve installed today after work. The new valve is rated to 220 psi - and is 1/2" all the way through - the horn is noticeably louder (didn't think that would be possible) - but it makes a huge difference. My valve is a SMC VXD series valve. FYI...

My coworkers are starting a pool to see how long before I get:

A) arrested
B) a huge ticket
C) all of the above

I wish nothing but trouble and tickets on anyone with Locomotive horns on their vehicle.

I actually asked a cop about that when I put my air horns on my Goldwing and my Mazda.

According to him, there is no such thing as a horn being too loud. The only laws are regarding the minimum volume of a horn, not the max. :waytogo:

But there is a noise ordinance and citation for violation of it in most cities... I'm sure if you piss the right people off you'll find yourself on the wrong end of a ticket...

Yeah, I imagine that if you drive around being an ass about it, you'll get nailed for disturbing the peace. That's to be expected.

But the horn, in and of itself, shouldn't be illegal.

theres a ticket here in Alberta thats call "stunting" and it is very broad thats what the police use when you're just being an ass in a vehicle.

basically anything that you do that MAY distract the attention of other drives is illegal and they call stunting. this particular ticket is steep with lots of points on your licence.

Sounds like a hip-hop term to me... "Why you always stuntin' dog?" :p:

The state of Oregon has a general noise ordinance - which covers stereos, exhaust, and (likely) anything else none of which can exceed X level of decibels at Y distance from vehicle (can't remember off the top of my head). And I'm sure if you really pissed off Johnny law, they could get you on disturbing the peace, reckless driving, etc, etc...

Obviously it's illegal to blow it on the road

- but then it's kind of like speeding - isn't it? :D

I live about 13 blocks away from the Tracks and wonder sometimes WTF the damn Train engineer is blowing at sometimes.......Id love to find his house with one of these on my truck about 2am one night :) . Be fun to sit by the tracks and scare the CR*** out of those idiots that sit on the tracks waiting for the signal to change....I dont think I would ever get tired of that :D

Igor - where'd you pick up that valve? Is it expensive?

Here is the part number:

SMC valve, part number: VXD2140-04N-6D1

Call up Hydra-power Systems 503-777-3361

http://www.hydrapowersystems.com/

It is rated for 220 psi - and it has 1/2 NPT ends on both sides. It does not come with a mounting bracket - I fabbed my own - but you could probably talk to their customer tech support and find a similar valve with a bracket (or even a cheaper one)

or call SMC direct and talk to their tech support

This valve is awesome - was $63.18 my cost through company discount - don't know what street price would be.

That's a great idea - LOL

I made the wife jump tonight when she got home from running errands - was watching TV and hit the panic button on my truck fob after I heard her car door shut and her coming in - she comes in shaking her head :haha: :haha:

That's sweet. How did you wire it? To your stock horn or on a seperate button?

LOL those are the exact horns i have and mounted it in the same position. with the compressor on the passenger side.

wired it up to the stock horn, when I bought the truck the factory horns were shorted, blow em and you just pop the fuse, so I had one of those cheap autozone $15 air horns. Finally got tired of high pitched nasally sounding......so of course I made a slight upgrade.

I got dual viair 480c's and a 7 gallon tank.

How quick do those dual viair 480Cs fill that 7 gallon tank? I'm still waiting to buy a compressor - do you think one would be enough to fill a 5 gallon tank?
