Trifecta discussion for BB12

We talk about this stuff every year and alot of it is the same stuff over and over..

Quality build, Attention to Detail and Seat Time will eliminate 99% of the crap. being prepared will handle the 1%

Id like to see some sort of rescue crew set up so ORD doesnt always get stuck doin it.

It's all a matter of volunteers. At this point I'm not going to offer the Trifecta unless I get a volunteer to take on the task of trail leading and then we can set up a op plan from there.

And yes, one of the things I would like to do is a designated rescue crew. Again, volunteers needed. :deal:

I don't mind rehashing the same discussion every year. 1) It gives me lots of ideas, 2) I get an idea of how people feel about the operation of the event, and 3) It gets some activity flowing in the BB forum. :D

You get cell signal on the majority of the trail IIRC.

Maybe time for a HAM radio guy on trifecta and one at base camp

Yeah it would be great to set that up. I just don't know anything about how that works.

Our race radio packages already basically do that. They aren't Ham. We have at least 10 miles of range most of the time. Sometimes in a place like Moab where we're dealing with say Pritchett canyon there is very little chance that a radio is going to get out from inside the canyon to town. Their not line of site per say but they don't get around obstacles that well.

I know that if someone had a radio on the trifecta that there is a really good chance that someone in town could be talking with them easily. There's also text messages since those will get out without having "full cell service".

We have three big radios already, one in car, two for chase rigs and then another handheld pit to car radio that is portable. Sometimes we have them with us at BB and if needed we could always bring them.

I kind of like the rescue crew and don't have an issue being on it. Honestly it's one of the few times at BB that I can kind of open it up and drive fast. Plus I usually require some for of payment in liquid refreshment. My wife doesn't say a word about extra gas in the car, she does about the liquer store charges:haha:

Texting is how we were ultimately able to get the best communication. Keith was able to get a call out several times so reception wasn't horrible, but then he ran into battery trouble. I'm sure that was due the drain on the phone struggling to get what reception there was.

I have never ran the trails. Is there some place a guy like me with a race radio could set up and camp out all day. Would work as a relay to ORD's radio in town. I have done this at the dessert races many times. I just get out the RC cars and play all day.

Maybe CK5 could start taking donations from the guys who run this trail to purchase a mobile base unit.

Once up out of Poison Spider the trail is over 1,000ft higher than town. I am guessing a race radio anywhere up there would have zero issues reaching into town, it's really only a few miles with no terrain issues.

I don't see the need for a relay honestly, just having some set forth guidelines for the trail leader to get in touch with someone in town would be fine. That could be by radio or cell phone.

If you were going to do a relay, the overlook at the top of Gold Bar might be a good place as well. Thinking along the lines of being quicker and a little easier to get to. Although you'd be further from town.

Depending on conditions and the radio setup 15 to 20 miles usually isn't an issue especially with some elevation. Now that person may only be able to provide status and not receive but it all still works.

I would make a good bet that a person could talk on the radios between Hells revenge and most of the trifecta for instance.

It doesn't seem that hard to get a text out most of the time, the radios won't hurt but the phones aren't bad up there. Besides, the best place for a relay is one of the rims that would be on the run that's likely in trouble...

I was on it for the 18 hour record, we were all tired at the end, but yes, I think everyone did have a good time.

It was a BLAST! It's all part of the challenge...makes you appreciate the beer in camp that much more :thumb: If I had known for certain I would make it to Moab this year, I would have been happy to lead... If I can get things in order to concrete my plans for '13 you can count me in Scott :waytogo:

I've been an interested party in these discussions for a few years now, although I have to admit that with every report of an 18 hour or so hour run up there, my interest is fading, because I couldn't do that anymore.

I have no doubt that those 18-hour treks across Golden Spike are what makes memories and friends, quite possibly for a lifetime.

However, I do have a simple solution how to avoid those marathon runs:

Stop calling it the 'Trifecta'.

The name of the trail, after all, is 'Golden Spike'.

:D

I was wondering how long it was going to take you to correct us. :haha:

You held out much longer than I thought you would.

Now we just need that guy that loves Star Wars in here and life would be grand:whistle:

I never could figure out why a truck named Stormtrooper is black and not white....

Since everything else has been discussed and rehashed at least a few times, maybe it's time to look at the obvious. I'd presume use of the non-original trail name has disturbed Karma, and you know she's not to be trifled with.
Or maybe Dan Mick has put out a secret curse on anyone who's not using the original name he coined for that trail? :pimp:

I always thought maybe the blazer was Darth Vader and Dave was one of the Minions, I mean Storm Troopers. :dunno:

Out of curiosity I searched the forum and you can blame pauly383 for starting the use of the term "Trifecta". It's not my fault at for continuing it's usage, I had no choice.....
