Truckasaurus. The rebirth and resurrection of a fallen legend

I wanna get some miles on it easy before I beat on it. The exhaust has no mufflers yet and is backed up and there is no front windscreen either. Gotta finish welding up the cage by the dash

So I am loving driving this thing. Gotta get the exhaust dialed in as it is cobbled together but it is like driving a new truck. Power is so smooth and instant. The big power does seem higher up in the power band but I think that has to do with the computer adapting.

I took it to the scales today. 6350 pounds. Holy ish! 3Tons!!! Ha ha.

I also managed to run out of gas on the freeway. That was....interesting.

Lets talk about that low end power. Converter, tire size, gears and total weight play a huge part. The torque curve of that cam is a little higher up too. To make even a stock 6.0 scream in a swap I usually suggest around a 2500 stall on the converter.

Now drop it in 4 low and mash it. LOL

As far as adapting. Its going to be very close as is. One thing that could be hurting is no exhaust and the engine hitting closed loop. You could be reverting air to the O2 causing a lean reading when its really not.

Ya that could be something to do with it. I know the exhaust is a hack job right now. Getting it fixed this Friday and two flow master super 10s put on.

It does seem to hesitate quite a bit and when I romp on it the motor seems to take a while to realize what the skinny pedal is doing.

I figured all the leaks in the exhaust are acting the same as the vacuum leak I had at the manifold making it lean out and lose power.

I have just been too eager to drive it.

I thought mine was heavy at 4,960 lbs. I have similar issues as you on acceleration. I am going to pull the B&M 2400 stall converter out of my burb and put it in my truck.
Not looking forward to pulling 2 transmissions though.

Don't you want the computer to enter closed loop? Isn't that where it is reading the o2 sensor and leaning it out or enriching it to get back to stoich?

If I am understanding, it is entering closed loop but getting inaccurate read due to exhaust leaks. Wouldn't this cause it to enrich the mix to overcome the higher afr??

Yea I was really surprised it was that heavy. Heavier than the Cadillac Escalade esv the motor came from

Got the headlights hooked up tonight with the lmc relay upgrade. Gotta say this is a pretty legit upgrade. I knew the factory system of lighting running power through the switch was ass backwards but the proof is illuminating. Ha ha

I am also enjoying doing minor things like setting my radio stations and choosing themes for the stereo colors. Ha ha. Beats removing transmissions and grinding rust.

You are correct. You do want closed loop but leaks will cause it to run overly rich. Overly rich is not a good thing and does not make good power. You would have to hit wide open, which forces open loop, the fuel would need to clear out then it would take off. So it could be contributing to some of the lazy down low.

Hope you buy a set of ear muffs for the passengers, those are really loud "mufflers". Buddy of mine put them on his K5 a year ago, he's taking them off now. It's piped all the way out the back too.

Bold is my biggest turn off on LS motors. Gen 3s just dont have the off idle grunt of gen 1s. Ive been thinking about doing a 5.3l but the more i look at 383 dynos, the more i want to build one of those instead.

and super 10s FTW!

208 what you are describing is exactly what is happening. If I romp on it there is hesitation and then it pins you to the seat and just screams.

I do have a really bad exhaust setup right now that is getting fixed. Massive leaks all the way around.

Look again at the LS motors. The truck motors in particular make great power down low. That is what I loved about them. Even if you compare it to the sbc it is still superior even if it does lack on the bottom end (which it doesn't) as it just blows the sbc away with Hp and torque everywhere

Funny you should mention that. I am seriously considering putting in a rugged radios setup for the family. Driving the rig is naturally loud as it has softop and mudders.

For about $1500 I can do headsets for 5, with intercom and noise cancelling and iPhone connectivity.

What I want to try and get a system that would allow the kids to watch and listen to the iPad but enable me to cut in and talk to them but wife and I be able to have conversation during driving.

Still kicking around ideas, but that is why I don't care about the mufflers too much. Then again, we will see when they are on.

Sure a 5.3l vs 350 is a great jump. A well built 383 will always smoke an LS on the bottom end. The stroke just isnt there. Ive looked into the 408 strokers but its big bucks. The 383 kits for 5.3l are starting to surface more and more so maybe ill go that route.

so, this is too good not to post. My buddy has a pretty sweet early Bronco. He also has two K5's that he is building, but the Bronco is his daily driver. Fully linked suspension, diesel motor, finished interior, full cage etc etc. Great truck.

That likes to eat transmissions. Clutches in particular. He called me when it left him stranded and I was more than happy to go help him out.

Can't believe I only finished this thing a week ago.

I kindly offered the services of my Chevy to tow his broken Ferd home.

I saw that Jeep on State St at the last car show. I had to look twice when I heard the diesel
