Turbo 400 disassembly

ATF is way better than gear oil, anytime I work with gear oil I smell it for days

In the book it says early cases use a snap ring above the lower band so i am putting it back in

If the band snap ring has a grove and locks in solid, it is probably supposed to be there

That's the case fretting ring I was telling you about, but it does not go on the band, if it was on the band it was installed wrong.

I googled it and the other manual tells about it , I have to save for a torque converter so I’ll order that book and see what it says

It goes against the case under the center support. So it protects the case surface between the back of the center support and the case. And then on the front of the center support goes a thick HD snap ring. Some don't have it, and the center support just rests right on the case. Once the snap ring is in, the center support should be tight and not wiggle. I always upgrade to a thicker HD snap ring.

I also rollerize the output shaft thrust, and dual feed the direct clutches for more holding power in high gear, etc.

dual feed the direct clutches
Can you dual feed a turbo 400 just like can be done with a 4L80E? Dual feeding a 4L80E is done to cure high pressure problems the 4L80E is known for having. I have never heard of high pressure problems on a Turbo 400. Would you internal dual feed a T400 the same way as a 4L80E by removing the second sealing ring from the center support, and then plug off the port next to the center support bolt?

Yep, same exact procedure. (I also leave off the center lip seal on the direct piston)

You aren't increasing or decreasing the pressure with that, you are just applying it over more area in 3rd gear. For some reason they use the whole piston in reverse, but not 3rd. By doing this it uses the whole piston for both. This gives you more holding force in 3rd for towing or high power applications.
