*UPDATE* Who all's injected? Finally got it! *FINISHED*

Another thing I did was get a newer oil pressure switch/sender. About '91 or so on the trucks, (and about the same time on the F-bodies) GM got smart, and combined the oil pressure switch and sender. The combo piece is smaller than the stock oil pressure sender by quite a bit. This piece wouldn't fit next to the distributor like stock, so I ended up putting it above the oil filter. I grabbed the wiring plug for it out of the wrecking yard, some FWD car as a matter of fact. All three wires were the same color as what were in the F-body harness. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The car I got the TPI off of has that in the block. Guess ill take it and use it, no sense to T into my oil pis line if that will work.

Re: Who all\'s injected? Finally got it!

You might need to adapt it, but thats not a big deal if you've got a good hardware store close by.

Early blocks may or may not have the hole above the oil filter tapped out, which is where I was forced to install mine because the intake interfered with the sender. I just used a stock elbow off of some other GM application (may have been an Astro) to get the switch pointed backwards which cleared the headers and clutch stuff.

Don't know why GM did it this way, but the hole above the oil filter is too "recessed" to thread a switch or sender directly into it.

If the TPI donor has it up top where the stock truck sender was, then I don't think you'll have any problem at all, since you'll be using the same intake. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Who all\'s injected? Finally got it!

After trying to get out the pipe plugs for the knock sensor.. I said forget trying to get out the plug for the oil pressure tap above the filter!
My original hardline for the mechanical oil pressure gauge was ran with 1/8" hard line with a compression fitting.
The oil pressure switch was a 1/4" NPT, so i had to get a 1/8" tee.... get a reducer from 1/4" to 1/8" for the pressure switch... then go from the 1/8" NPT to a compression fitting for my gauge... Spent a while in OSH working with what they had. /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif

Got the TPI running tonight! /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif Got some bugs to work out... I set the timing at 10 at first.. i guess its supposed to be at 0 or 4-6.. whoops.. /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif Made it 1 block, turned around and it ran like ass... And i'm getting a code 42 and 43: Electronic timing control error and detonation sensor error.
Tommorow i will reset the timing, clear the codes, set the adjustable fuel psi regulator, and try again. But it runs... and the throttle response seems awsome.

Re: Who all\'s injected? Finally got it!

COOL!! /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif Now you got me all excited to get mine done.

Why was it so hard to get the pipe plugs out? Because they were so rusted in or something? The donor car had the PSI sending unit above the oil filter, so Ill just put it back down there.

Timing should be at 6* According to the underhood label!

Re: Who all\'s injected? Finally got it!

TPI is awesome. I have it on my 85. I am running an 88 MAF setup. I used a painless wiring harness with my install. It was simple, and the directions and tech support from Painless is great.

If you have ever seen a Painless harness (or similar) next to a stock setup you will realize quickly why trying to use a stock harness would suck. The painless harness is way simpler and is marked as to what everything are. The wires are color coded, etc. The stock harness is a giant octopus that is flat out scary.

I am currently not running the VSS on my truck but will be soon. I have the filter for it but haven't installed it yet. I haven't had any problems without it yet. I did have some stalling in the beginning because the tuning wasn't right but now that everything is adjusted pretty well it if fine.

I have heard running a MAF setup in a first gen is harder then my second gen because you have problems clearing the mech fan blades because the engine bay is shorter. It can probably be done though.

Also don't even think about trying to use a big cap HEI (incap coil) it won't fit. With the TPI manifold being what it is it would be a nightmare to work on anything back there.

Re: Who all\'s injected? Finally got it!

P.S.

Better Throttle response, better mileage, easier starting, more HP, more torque, runs at any angle, etc are all benefits to TPI.

I watched Rob's (TheRobZilla) truck tip onto its side and run perfectly the whole time. It was pretty awesome. I was completely sold on the TPI swap after that. It was amazing. /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

Re: Who all\'s injected? Finally got it!

I run a stock TBI engine from a 95 Suburban in my 71. It works very well for the time being, but this winter I am going to install a 330 HP Vortec crate motor. At that time, I may up grade to a MPI, but don't really have to. The TBI is by far the cheapest & easiest to use & it will handle the 330 HP engine...
The easy starting, better mileage etc is great. I do not control the tranny with the computer, just the engine. I have a 700R4 auto that is pretty built, & run the TCI downshift kit on it. Pulls real good with the 3.06:1 first gear & 3.73:1 rear plus cruises easy at 70-75.

My 2c worth... /forums/images/graemlins/usaflag.gif
