I had a blown 350 SBC, 700R4 in a 3300 lb. Studebaker. Not one problem with the 700R4. I swapped the 700 for TH400 with a Gear Vendors Overdrive. It was electronically controlled by a Gear Vendors module. It was very erratic from the beginning, sometimes getting o/d, sometimes not. Other times it wouldn't come out of o/d. All new parts.
I figure I'd have been $3500 ahead and no wasted time if I hadn't tried it. That's my experience, yours may be different. The manual 4L80 is a better choice....
 
That does sound like a good idea, and if that 700 blows ill still have my 400...but ill have to change the input to my t-case since its a 32 spline for the 400 not the 27 spline for the 700. thanks Ira!

did you have a FULL manual valve body 4L80E?
