I have tried mixing av gas with 91. 91 and several different brands of octane booster at different times. 91, av gas, and octane booster. Always the same, which has me questioning what the F am I hearing.
Today is the 1st time since 2019 I put 87 in it, and that is on top of 3rd tank of 91 with 2 bottles of Lucas octane boost.

So I am reading that .040-.080 quench is the target.

I have not de-carboned this engine in years, and plug r43ts are couple years old. Going to do plugs soon, will de carbon before and change plugs.

If the octane doesn't matter, maybe it's not spark knock. Same story if turning the dizzy back doesn't make any difference.

Road test this morning much better. Going to try 6° base timing

I am 4° btdc @500 rpm, 10° btdc @700rpm vacuum advance to manifold source. Still a slight bit of noise from tail pipe. I do not hear anything from the engine, that doesn't mean it's not there just that I can't.
It seems to be more prevalent after and up shift. Which I am now thinking are to early, and lugging the engine down.
Current project is adding a vacuum switch to the Torque converter lock up control circuit. This won't help much for the lower gears but will slightly dely the lock in 4th and allow unlock under heavy load in 4th, which it will not do now.
Next I plan on tuning the governor to hold ea gear to a higher rpm before up shift.

I am having difficulty believing that quench is causing detonation. The felpro head gasket at .039 and with a worst case of .025 deck height is .064". All the reading I have done say's .040 -.080 for quench. I have used that same head gasket on so many sbc, most stock to mild builds and never had an issue before.
Stocker's used a dish, and .025 + .039 gasket, would simply changing to flat top make the difference?

Did you de-carbon the motor yet ?
Hate for ya to spend time and effort dial’n in the tune and timing adjustments when you could have hot spots giving you fits and giving false notions on where the sweet spot should be.
I would stick with a colder plug such as your R43’s when you replace them and not go up in range until you know the issue is resolved.

Decided to run some water downbthe carb on cold start up.
Ran a whole solo cup(red) down with out staling it.
Doesn't look like it accomplished much.

I do have a single can of GM Top Engine clean. Hesitant to use at my home, neighbors might not appreciate being smoked out. Plus i don't want a visit from the Fire dept.

Engine at running temp and 2500+ RPM? The crap might be hung up in the muffler.

My dad used to hook a hose to a plastic bottle in the cab. Had an air cleaner lid with a hole in it. Would squeeze gently while driving it until it slowed a tiny amount. Then mashed the throttle and squeezed. Not enough to kill it obviously.

Find a very big parking lot that’s empty late in the evening and let the smoke flow freely - I’ve always used some ATF to clean things out but the smoke is tremendous.

Decided was time for new plugs.
This is the driver side.#1 is on the right

Thinkingvthese are a little cool.
CR43TS
Thinking I should go up to 44 ?

I had cr43ts and cr45ts to choose from today. I put the 45's in. Went out to test the tcc lock up vacuum switch I installed this week. With the timing changes I am at 16" Hg at idle @500 rpm. Switch comes set at 13", open below 13, or closed above. 1st test drive never locked up, unless coasting. I stopped at Autozone to get plugs, but they didn't stock cr44ts, 43 and 45 yes just not 44 ?? Made an adjustment in the parking lot, for lock at lower vacuum. Was better locking up at @ 11". Slight accelerate seems to be right 10-11", cruise is @ 13". Adjusted the full 1.5 turns ccw to unlock at 6-7" and went down the highway again. I think this will do the trick. I also think road trips are going to much more fun.
On the fence currently whether to tune the trans governor with my 33" tires or wait till I deiced on 35 or 37s.

It’s definitely a different time frame when a parts house doesn’t stock any R44’s. Damn shame!
