What is a REAL truck?

Etymology

The word "truck" might have come from a back-formation of "truckle" with the meaning "small wheel", "pulley", from Middle English trokell, in turn from Latin trochlea. Another explanation is that it comes from Latin trochus with the meaning of "iron hoop". In turn, both go back to Greek trokhos (τροχός) meaning "wheel" from trekhein (τρέχειν, "to run"). The first known usage of "truck" was in 1611 when it referred to the small strong wheels on ships' cannon carriages. In its extended usage it came to refer to carts for carrying heavy loads, a meaning known since 1771. With the meaning of "motor-powered load carrier", it has been in usage since 1930, shortened from "motor truck", which dates back to 1916.[1][2]

"Lorry" has a more uncertain origin, but probably has its roots in the railroad industry, where the word is known to have been used in 1838 to refer to a type of truck (a freight car as in British usage, not a bogie as in the American), specifically a large flat wagon. It probably derives from the verb lurry (to pull, tug) of uncertain origin. With the meaning of "self-propelled vehicle for carrying goods" it has been in usage since 1911.[3][4]

"Load Carrier"
"To Pull"
"To Tug"
"Carrying Goods"
"Pully"

So IMO... If it's purpose is no longer ment for the above definitions... It's not a truck?

If your friends or relatives have ever asked to borrow it during their move........ It's a truck.

A truck should be something that can do work - like tow or haul - but this definition actually rates a K5 somewhat low. I would say it doesn't matter how the vehicle is used (DD, drag racing, whatever), just what it is capable of.

I would like to say "no IFS", but there are a lot of capable heavy workers out there that have it. To me:
-Selectable transfer case
-Low range
-Body-on-frame construction
-4.3L +
-Cargo area
-Tow hitch

Sadly, this would include the Astro/Safari and some S10s

2WD counts if it is a dually, has a 5th wheel hitch or a dump bed. If you're not specific here then things like a Buick Roadmaster start becoming trucks. A 2WD suburban could be considered a giant car just the same.

According to the faded, cracked bumper sticker I scraped off my trucks old rotted step and tow bumper, "Real Trucks Dont Have SPARK PLUGS"........

I had an '87 Pontiac grand safari wagon that would fit as many sheets of 4x8 plywood as the roof would allow when we were building our ramps in high school. It wouldn't do anything fast with the wheezy 307, but I also did some pretty retarded stuff with that car and never got it stuck. So maybe it qualifies :) It also slid corners pretty well if you had the momentum, second only to my '83 Impala with 700r4 and 3.42s.

A real truck is a vehicle that is capable of doing work. Carrying a heavy load, towing a trailer, and getting the job done. Any truck that contains the words "crossover" or "unibody" in it's description is nothing more that a tougher-looking car. I would even consider full-size vans as trucks due to their truck frame and utility-based nature.

You cant define a truck by its modifications.
What works for me, may not work for you.

Take my 2500hd. Could have left it perfectly stock. And to SOMEONE, it would have been a perfectly good "truck"
not me, i would have torn the front apart in less than a year using it how i have.

swapped it, geared it, locked it, hydro, 8" of lift and some 37's
-gets me where i need to be
-gets me on and off the beach for weekends at a time safely
-has pulled out countless people
-have taken it on state to state road trips
-backroads
-highways and cities
-take it out on dates
-not the prettiest, not the ugliest
-has some rust
-clean interior, its comfy and has a good radio

For me, this is MY TRUCK, to any one of you...totally impractical.

different strokes for different folks :woot:

It looks like the rear is sagging lower then the front. How much weight ya got there on the 5th wheel? Your bigger tires takes away a lot of HP that could have been used for better towing. IMO... I don't classify it as a truck.

Let's add #16: A Real truck has a winch:D

I think if you can get unstuck without the help of others then you're not stuck:) and that's where a winch with the right hardware comes in. That's why I say a REAL truck has a winch.

I dont care what "truck" you have... you can get it stuck. if you havent stuck it, youre not trying hard enough. winch or no winch. I have seen plenty of trucks that could not winch out

I think if it comes to a point where your wheeling it to try and get stuck, it's no longer a truck at that point. :dunno::whistle:

When I think of a REAL truck... I think...

What a REAL truck is not...

10. Can not get stuck.

says "can not" to me that says unstickable...you then added #16 has to have a winch.

your kind of starting to contradict a few things here.

For the record.
#17 built yourself or yourself and wheeling friends

What is or is not a truck is defined by the opperators needs.

No contradictions. Just coming up with ideals of what a Real truck is:D

Can't rely on friends to always be there when one needs help.

What is or is not a truck is defined by the opperators needs.

With this analogy, a motorcycle could be classified as a truck:dunno:
