always had a soft spot for scouts. My first 4x4 was a stock 1962 scout 80. I flat towed it all over the place. lots of fun half cab/full cab/no cab... folding windshield... had thoughts of building one, but other things came up and a blazer found me.
biggest issue I saw with building one was how wide the frame rails are. they were perfectly straight and don't narrow in the front. unless going full width axles your turning radius will be crap. but, I had planned to pull the body on one, chop the solid frame cross members, narrow the frame rails, and then sleeve/ extend the body mounts back out to their original locations. really looked like something that could be completed in a weekend. its all flat metal and square tubing on those things. I was planning on using a set of landcruiser axles from an FJ62, setting the frame rails at the correct spacing for the factory spring perches on the front axle, and then relocating the perches on the rear axle as needed...
finished result would be a vehicle capable of u turns on most city streets? had to be better on the trail? something to consider I think!
that was the plan anyway... blazers and buggies for me now.
I can still hear those vacuum windshield wipers swooshing and making cool sounds as they failed to do much good for the visibility!
