Also, a guy I work with went on his first flight on my MH-53 helicopter. While flying at around 120 knots, he decided to stick his head out the windows for a better view, bad idea. His headsets and goggles went flying off into the ocean and he had to hold his hands over his ears for the rest of the flight. Pretty funny watching the helicopter pull back into its spot and watch him run off the ramp holding his fingers in his ears.

TOO FUNNY! I had a similar thing happen at night... A new aerial observer with me on his first night flight stuck his head out the window of our CH-53E at about 140kts. His visors were ripped off his helmet, and the night vision goggles he had on were ripped off as well. We had just received our ANVIS-9 NVG's, and he had on a set. $13,000 out the window. Literally. Thankfully we were over water, because otherwise we would have been searching for them for a few days...

I saw a guy walk out on the fantail (rear end) of the ship when we were firing the 5" guns. I think he soiled his pants.
The best part is that it was my guys firing the gun. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I assume you were on a destroyer? I was dumb enough to be out smoking (unauthorized, due to weapons testing /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif) when they fired off the CIWS. Scared me senseless. Not dumb enough to stand on the fantail though. That is dumb.

[/ QUOTE ]

Spruance Class Destroyer. CIWS really can't hurt you when it fires unless you are in front of the barrels. /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif But when it is firing 75 rounds per second (yes you read that correctly) it sure can give you a scare and jolt your heart a little.
The 5"/54 can collapse your lungs and ear drums if you are too close to it. He got away pretty much unharmed though. He was about 40 feet from the breach.

Re: what\'s the dumbest thing you have seen someone do??

I was working in a Pep Boys in Las Vegas, when some guy walked up to me and said he needed some spray paint. I showed him the paint, he said he needed BLACK paint. I told him there is flat, gloss and regular BLACK. He got a very confused look on his face /forums/images/graemlins/screwy.gif, so I just handed him a can of gloss Black paint.
He looked at the can of BLACK paint, proceded to read the instructions, warnings, net weight of the can. Turned the can upsidedown to look at the bottom /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif. Pulled the top off, sprayed some BLACK paint into the air and sniffed it (like BLACK paint will smell diffenent then red paint). He then put the cap back on then can of BLACK paint, and asked "Do you have anything darker"?
I took the can away from him and handed him some flat BLACK paint. He bought a whole case /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif.

Re: what\'s the dumbest thing you have seen someone do??

There was a guy on my ship one time when we pulled in Hong Kongwho ventured into Wan Chai (the red light district). After a brief tour he stopped into an establishment....i will let you figure out the type of business involved...and started to drink. The first stupid thing he made was to buy a "Bar Girl" a drink. Basically you are paying $10.00 for a soda for them. He followed that up with many more rounds for himself and the "Bar Girl" to the tune of almost $1,000.00 in one night. Towards the end of the night he was fooling around with the "Bar Girl" <------ Third Stupid mistake in one night incase you are counting. The only reason he was getting any action was because of the amount of money he had already spent. The girl figure they can get more money if they give a little.
Well it worked.....He spent even more money there
/forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif
The best part is, after it was all said and done and the bar closed he headed directly towards the nearest pay phone. He proceded to tell his WIFE how much money he had spent that night. WHich was not too bad until he told her where it was spent. The next sentence out of his drunk mouth was about the "Special Service" he had recieved under the table from the bar girl.
Then to top it all of he told his wife that the bar girl was better at it than she was /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

That is where the phone call ended

Re: what\'s the dumbest thing you have seen someone do??

hahahahaha port call make for fun sories, ive been there(hong kong) good times

Re: what\'s the dumbest thing you have seen someone do??

we had a (i think) 10,000lb forklift at one shop i worked at and we cut a tire on the steer axle (rear end). so we took the tire to a tire shop and had it replaced, when we got back one of our guys thats not exactly a mechanic, put it on backwards(dually), we all stood there watching him install it trying no hide our laughter with a conversation about equipment. then he backed it out of the shop and parked it out in the yard, a few days later he was told to get the lift and unload a chain off of a truck. he backed it out and tried to steer and the tire hif the body of the lift and he proceeded to floor it and get it stuck. so we pulled out with an excavator and he went on his way and did it again. then we walked up to him and said "Gordon, look at the tires..." he stared with his trademark blank stare for a few seconds, then looked at me with a shocked look on his face and said, "ITS BACKWARDS!" i asked him "and why is that?" "someone put it on backwards," he said. and we laughed and walked away while he sat there realizing it was him that did it.

then on another occasion he was washing a trencher on the washrack in january (its cold outside). and we have this gutter in the middle of the washrack and a pit at one end that all the water and mud gets pumped out of. its about 4'x4' square and 5' deep and be was spraying this trencher and backed right into it, and sank up to his shoulders. so he went to the locker room and changed. then not ten minuites later did the same damn thing. i was on my creeper under a backhoe and watched him walk through the shop dripping with stinky green/brown mud twice!

Re: what\'s the dumbest thing you have seen someone do??

In my last command (japan) we had a AO1 who went on leave. Here is where the fun starts. The guy told his wife he was leaving on deployment and he would be back in a cupple of weeks. He told the command he was going home to Virgina or where ever he was from. So he took leave for a cupple of weeks and flew to.....................Yep not home, To Thailand. So a cupple weeks into his leave the Wife calls and askes when hes coming home, you know wants to set up somthing nice for his homecoming, well the guy on watch is like "Well ma'm we dont have any body on det. right now so im not shure what your talking about.", Pretty funny, so the guy getts back, gets told to put on his blues and is promply reduced in rank to AO2.

sad thing was the skipper actually gave hime back E-6 right before he left /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif

Re: what\'s the dumbest thing you have seen someone do??

I have seen many E-6's busted down. Happens semi-often around here. Probably at least 30 in hte last 2 years. I have also seen an E-7 busted to E-6.
One E-6 we had on hte ship had 18 years in the navy. One month later he was an E-2 /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Re: what\'s the dumbest thing you have seen someone do??

Here's one for ya: (I didn't see this, but I read it) A guy wants to kill himself but he wants to do it with style so he drinks some poison, drenches himself in gas and lights him self on fire, then jumps off the cliff with a rope tied around his neck. He takes out the gun to shoot himself but he misses and shoots the rope. He plunges into the cold ocean below which puts out the flames. He swallowed alot of water and ended up throwing up the poison. Some fisherman pulls him out of the water but he died of hypothermia instead..... /forums/images/graemlins/screwy.gif
