Whats your "wet dream drivetrain"....

For my wheeler.

That vette lS7 ? That spins 7400rpm and makes 600+ hp. That should help the power to weight ratio. Nv4500/atlas in a trazer or truggy. Shaved 60/14. Lightened as much as possible

Tow rig

6V92ta. 5+4 Trans. Later model air ride rear.all wrapped up in a late 60's or early 70's 2 axle day cab kw or Pete. Hop up the 6v a bit and straight pipe it.

DD

1st Gen 6bt/nv4500/205/d60/14b. All wrapped up in that said late 89-91 Silverado burb. Pump the 6bt to 650-700lb tq. Nuttin ridiculous so everything lasts 300k.

Edit: maybe a 3 axle with a beavertailed flatbed on the tow rig

To many Varibles,

BUT!!

For a Tow Rig, Common Rail Cummins with twins and a Built G56 and a gear vendors along with the AAM axles from the Donor

For a Wheeling rig # 1 , Optimizer 6.5 with a banks turbo 6.5 NV4500/NV241 Built GM 1-tons with 5.13's welded rear ARB front

Wheeling rig # 2, Stock TBI 350 or 454 4L80E Doubler with a 241 instead of NP205 Steering Rockwells with OEM Violator Shafts and lockers

For a Daily Driver Commuter, P400 6.5 with a Banks kit 4L80E with 6-speed Conversion and a 241 with Ford 1-ton front and 14-bolt rear

Parts runner, N/A 6.2 700R4 NP208 '91 10-bolts ( or a 4BT. either would work )

Plow truck, Vortec headed 383 TBI Built 4L80E NP205 1-tons

Option one: twin turbo duramax, NV5600, NP205 with the low max 3.0 ad twin sticks.

Option two: GM 572, built T56, divorced atlas

Option three: detriot 6v53T straight piped, NV5600, 203/241 doubler

I was thinking more about a street driven truck, but all your listinmgs have merit.and I wouldn;t mind having a Cummins in a daily driver (older 12V version, with no electronics)..

My '82 GMC is set up pretty good for plowing,I like the 6.2 and TH400, the motor is gutless enough not to just spin the wheels, and the TH400 makes driving it a lot easier and makes plowing a lot easier...

My Suburban has a 6.2 and a 700R4 ,the trans is ailing and needs replacing or a rebuild though...

As I got older,my enthusiasm for wrenching has waned a lot..I want something simple to work on,and doesn't NEED to be fixed very often...I prefer older trucks with no EFI or computer & emission crap, one thats exempt from emission tests..
Seeing a 6.2 isnt the easiest engine to fix,and the price of fuel is too high,I'd just assume have a 292 straight six in my trucks if the diesels croak--or maybe an old 283,those gave good fuel mileage (283 probably better than the 292)--and backed by a TH400,you'd never have any tranny woes,as they dont have enough power to hurt one,but still are able to propel the truck adequately...a straight six with a Richmond gear 6 speed would be cool...I'd like to have a 454 again, but I couldn't affird to feed one any more...

Next thread will be titled "What's your NIGHTMARE drive train??"....mine would be any factory one built after 1988 or so,the newer it is,,the more I'd hate it!..nothing I hate more than a vehicle with 100 sensors and a computer thats constantly setting the "check engine" light off and give nothing but greif at insoection time--and keeps your wallet empty from buying costly electrical parts that dont FIX it!..I can live without the leaking intakes, cracked heads, weak overdrive trannies, and poor quality steel that quickly rots away to nothing too..I see a lot of 2000 and up trucks with rotted frames and bodies,my '82 is in better conditon than many late model ones I see here often!..

36DDD 24 36 5'3" 118 lbs

Pistol grip ears, buckle-back teeth, built in knee pads, and for the love of god can cook and clean!!

In a street driven truck, lets go with a v-12 ( for smoothness) and a 6 or 7 speed full auto then.

Mine as well throw a couple of turbos on the v-12:D

I'd be happy with my current k5, just add the following;

Ramjet 502 for healthy power that runs pretty smooth with efi

Th400 built to withstand a nuclear holocaust

RCV axles

I keep thinking a small light weight buggy with the VW TDI out of my wife's 2003 jetta would be cool. Throw some yota axles and a D300 in for good measure. She keeps saying no though :doah:

For all the guys that said they wanted a car 4-speed or T56 . Why would you want an Inferior trans that won't hold up to the higher GVW of our rigs seems to me your giving up reliability and the low first gear and gaining nothing except for the closer ratios .
Ever driven a Early 90's 1/2 ton chevy with a 5speed?? they suck ass and they have that close ratio trans mentioned above ( early ones were T5's then onto the NV3500 and 3550)

And for all the guys who talk trash on SM465's .........but want NV4500's your getting almost exactly the same gear split just with and extra gear. ( I love SM465's and NV4500's)

Diesel4me, I've lost count how many times I've heard older guys rave about how great 283's are .There almost as bad as the Diesels guys that claim 700hp and 28mpg. I like your Idea about the 292 but save the 283's for resto crowd or for boat anchors

Thats the truth.

those car transmissions can take the horsepower, but not the weight load at the other end.

the only reason i would say nw4500 over a sm465 is the overdrive.

and finally, i thought this was a wet dream thread. i cant see how an inline six or tiny v8 fits into that.

Now you're just talking crazy. Just kidding.

A combo like that would be fine if you never had to go on the highway. That straight six would be great for around town or a trail only truck.

"Adequately propel" would certainly be a matter of opinion. I don't think I'd be happy with the torquey straight six or the 283 in a truck. Would they get it moving? Yes, but not enough for me. And I suspect the 283 would be working pretty hard to keep a truck moving along at speed, which would eat up more gas than a bigger engine that isn't working as hard.

I like that you came up with this thread because of all the different ways people would build and use these drivetrains. Kinda cool seeing what works for that guy doesn't work for this one.

Can't you get an overdrive from Atlas for the SM465? That's what I was planning on doing after dropping in the 6.5TD. Only issue I know is that the OD pushed the tranny back 7" so would that mean having the driveshaft shortened by 7"s as well?

big block or well build 383 with nv4500 and doubler with rockwells and ram assist 4 wheel steering.so pretty much would like to have the gravedigger sittin in my driveway otherwise.haha.i really like my 465 in my truck.with the right gearing and all it does real well.i generally dont go over 60 mph and i have a mildly built 350 that pushes thru 2nd and 3rd pretty well for my uses.the only thing ive broke on that or the 205 is the power sleeve in between the 2 got stripped.granny is nice for crawling as well.im sure its not ideal for some people but its worked well for 40 years and hopefully will for anether 40.

Dream drivetrain.
605 legend
