White Phoenix

Building for Rubicon
I was just avenging beags, but yeah I can update here.
I am in the process of purging my collection of vehicles, donating one or 2 and hopefully selling a couple by the end of the year.
Then it will be parked and the rebuild of parts will begin.
My choice is set now and I will run my oil burner perkins T6.354 and I plan on a nv4500 behind it.
Which means I will not be able to whip that thing quick.
I will need to remove the engine crossmember and fab a custom one.
I already have a mockup from the k5 I had it in but I need to make a nicer one.
I also sold the 38" swampers so now I will be getting the 40" toyo on 17" rims.
My plan is to use the np241 behind the 4500, I realized that I will have a better crawl ratio than my k5 with the doubler.
And with the torque of diesel I am set
Sounds like a decent setup

Will the weight kill it? Not sure the weight of that but sure it’s comparable to other 6 cyl diesels i.e heavy

It's equivalent to a Cummins.
The difference is completely mechanical injection, direct injection even. Has a vacuum pump if I want to keep the brakes but I prefer hydro boost.

Going to make any power or overall RPM adjustments?

Ok so as I always do go back and forth between my choices (definitely 1st world problem).
So I am going with the 454/4l80e still to decide if I need a doubler or not but will run a 241 either way.
What would you say bbc owners is a good cruise rpm with 454 in overdrive?
Trying to pick my gears on the axles and no I am not looking for suggestions on the gears nor the tires size .
I just want to have the most comfortable rpm for cruise and work my way back since that's what it will do the most.

Oh and it's a stock 93 tbi, will not do anything to it.
Might eventually down the road replace it with a l29 also stock but for now this is it

Can’t add much for the RPM for that application, but I’m betting with the bbc and any decent gears, you probably won’t need a Doubler using that 241 unless you get some big tires

But that tire size will also dictate the gear. Now we’re going in circles :haha:

What size tire ?

Ok, obviously I have to be more precise.
Is a big block comfortable cruising at 1800 rpm? 2000? Or does it need to be 2200rpm or more?

My 454 seems to like cruising ~2100 rpm. Depends on your definition of cruise. But I only have 37” tires and 4.56 gears in overdrive.

See I have 2 sets of axles, one on it with 4.10 that has been gone through, and another that is sitting in my backyard with 4.56 that needs going through.
I would like to run 40" tires but would step down to 38 if my 4.10 would work.

By cruising I mean driving all day and not having the engine screaming nor bogging down. Minimum speed expectations are 70 and hopefully closer to 75 with possibilities of passing at 80-85mph

F I remember correctly you have the nv4500 right?

I think mine is in the high 2k doing 80 seems to do fine.
Yeah I figured 2600-2800 would be fine at the top end but I am hoping I can keep it on the low end without killing it or hunting for the right gear drive to od.
I guess I need to find the torque curve for that engine

255/85/16 ( 33.0 tire) / 4l80-e / 70mph

3.73 = 1990 rpm
4.10 = 2187 rpm
4.56 = 2432 rpm
4.88 = 2603 rpm
5.13 = 2736 rpm

if it was me and going to be towing a lot go deep . min 4.56 or deeper to keep the engine in the power band .

255/85/16 (33.0 tire ) / 4l80-e / 80mph

3.73 = 2274 rpm
4.10 = 2499 rpm
4.56 = 2780 rpm
4.88 = 2975 rpm
5.13 = 3127 rpm

at this speed 4.10 looking good to me .

So looks like the L19 which is the tbi 7.4l has the peak torque of 380-385 @1400rpm.
So i guess from 1400 to 2000rpm it should be comfortable so if I can get it to 1800or a little more it should be a good ratio.
And if I feel it's not comfortable I can always put the 4.56 axles in.
I guess I answered my question.
