who else here drives without wearing a seat belt?

The seventh commandment? I see what you did there...

:haha: :haha:

Actually it was just random. It's taken from

The 10 Welding Commandments

1. Thou shalt not weld on an unpurged tank, for the noise will be very loud when the tank explodes and thy friends will console thy widow in ways generally unacceptable to thee.

2. Thou shalt secure thy tanks, lest one fall on thy foot and transform thee into less than a graceful dancer when called upon by thy wife or other female friend.

3. Thou shalt clean thy work carefully, lest thy gaze upon thy work falling apart as it passeth out of thy sight.

4. Thou shalt place thy work in jigs, or other holding fixtures, for the eye is a poor instrument for the measurement of angles and great will be the wrath of thy leader as thou art doing thy task a second time.

5. Thou shalt not weld near batteries, compressed gasses, or flammable materials lest a spark from thy labors would cause thee to continue thy chosen profession in an open field or other such drafty place.

6. Thou shalt take great care of thy tools and equipment, lest thy friend who is in charge of such things smites thee about thy head and shoulders for being a wastrel and a knave.

7. Thou shalt not perform thy art without proper ventilation, for the smell of toxic gasses produced by the heating of primers, and plated or painted sufaces is worse than a bad cigar and will remain with thee until the end of thy days.

8. Thou shalt not weld without goggles, nor shalt thou allow others to gaze upon thy labors, lest thy employment, or the employment of others be changed to sitting on cold and rainy streets while selling pencils.

9. Thou shalt wear sturdy gloves, for burns upon thy hands are a source of great pain when thou art attempting to raise thy bowling average.

10. Thou shalt ground thy work, when thou weldeth with a machine of arcs, for thou art a poor conductor of electricity and the shock which thou shalt receive shall ruin thy plans for thy weekend.

My opinion? Math makes this an easy choice. I'll wear my newly modernized belts even putzing around the pasture.

My little brother is the one-in-a-hundred who almost certainly would have died if he had worn his seat belt during his wreck. It's quite a story.

Ya know what? He won't even go down the driveway now without a seat belt. It's just not worth the risk.

My dad based that on the three major crashes he was involved in. (As far as I know) First one was when he was in high school, and his 55 Chevy got T-boned in the driver's door by a dump truck, He got thrown into the passenger seat, and the driver's seat was pushed half-way across the car.
The second one was in a radio equipped MUTT Jeep at 29 Palms, where he was pushing too hard into a soft bend and rolled it down the bank, he was thrown clear of it while it was rolling down, and it landed up-side down.
The third one was with a big block 60's Thunderbird. He was doing about 130 when a car pulled out in front of him, he put the car in the ditch and hit a culvert, He told me didn't remember anything after this until he came to in the back seat. The steering wheel was touching the roof and the dashboard was about 8 inches from the seat.

If you choose to not wear a seat belt because your old man experienced more than his fair share of miracles, feel free. But to ignore years and years of research and stats that prove seatbelts save lives is just silly.

I'm not ignoring it, in fact I completely agree with it, however whether or not I wear it shouldn't be of anyone else's concern.

Looks like you'll never be a passenger in my vehicle. I won't leave the driveway unless everyone is buckled up. I refuse to be the one getting brain damage during a collision or rollover because a passenger is too cool for seatbelts and ends up becoming a projectile inside the cab of my rig.

I am not trying to start shit with you, but your statement doesn't take into consideration how we are all affected in our insurance rates, health care costs and what the government does to "protect all of us from ourselves"....
And putting all of that aside, ask first responder how long the sight of a dead or critically injured person stays in their mind. And what about your family if something goes wrong?
So go ahead and tell me that it's not anyone's concern if you wear one, but I will say that your thought is selfish...

I was only a wrecker driver, it wasn't my job to take care of the human damage, but I remember the times that I went to fatal accidents... And I have seen the pain it has caused others.

If there was no impact to anyone else, at all, I would wholeheartedly agree.

If we shoved your wreckage and body off to the side of the road (alive or dead) and everyone continued on with their lives, there would be no reason to make you wear a belt. A belt isn't going to be the primary cause of almost any accident, but lack of wearing one HAS resulted in higher insurance premiums, higher cost of new vehicles, higher cost of emergency services and health care, and the overall draining of money that could be spent on other things that benefit everyone, not just those who choose to incur those costs to society. (Edit: I'd like to point out that *I* don't get to choose whether or not I pay for all those, even if I decided not to drive and/or do everything right and never have an accident)

It is no different than someone who chooses not to work getting free services/money from the government, believing it's not hurting anyone else, and it's their choice. Both DIRECTLY impact the pocket books of anyone that pays taxes. It is not the first order of impact. It's everything that causes expense after that accident.

That's not an intent to lead into a discussion of taxes never going down, which is another topic. :)

There are times where wearing a seatbelt may have been advantageous. However, it's a numbers game and over the years seatbelts win out on that. Just like helmets.. Now there's a thing, if they really wanted people to survive accidents they'd make everyone wear helmets, HANS devices, harnesses ect...

That's something else entirely, Here in Illinois helmets aren't required on motorcycles, but I always wear one, even if it's just riding a four wheeler through the woods.
Seeing your friend missing half the skin on his head after skidding down the highway on it at 60 MPH tends changes your views on some things.

I slammed into a tree with my first car at a measly 35 mph and broke the steering column in the impact. If I hasn't been wearing my seat belt if have done it with my chest! I always wear a seat belt, period.

I also went to school with a boy who wouldn't wear his who was only thrown far enough out the window in his roll over to insulate the top of his door from the ground with his upper body through two flips. He didn't make it...

I never wear my seatbelt when I'm jockeying around cars in the shop. And that's about it.

Choice and self determination are all secondary considerations to doing the right and longest lasting thing for myself and my family. It doesn't matter if I don't like my seatbelt, or if I think seatbelt laws are dumb. There are a couple of people that depend on me, and I have to be around and able to deliver for them. Proper PPE, taking an Uber, using backup jackstands, not texting and driving, and wearing a seatbelt all further that objective.

...back to the beer fridge thread.

I think the only people that do not wear seat belts are the people that have never been in an crash, and have no concept of what the G-Forces are like in a crash.
Back in 2006, I got t-boned by a minivan going 50mph. That rang my bell real good. I ended up sitting in the center of my bench seat, with the shifter up against my right knee. My feet were pinched in the floor board of the truck so bad, that I had to take my shoes off to get my feet out. Had I not been wearing a belt, I have no idea what might have happened.

Heck,I've had my chest slam into the steering wheel on my garden tractor while plowing my driveway--its top speed in third gear high range is only 7.5 mph,but when I backed up and floored it to get a running start in top gear to ram some snow further back, the blade snagged on a crack in the asphalt,it stopped dead,--and I got chest slammed!--dam near went right over the hood...my ribs hurt for months after that impact..

There isn't any seat belts on it either...if it topped out at 10 mph it should have them!--also falling out of the seat while mowing could turn ugly fast too..you don't have to be going fast to get severe injuries...

When I was younger, and dumber, I never wore a seatbelt. I got into a pretty bad accident about 15 years ago that threw me from the car. Luckily for me, my foot got caught in the car so I got dragged on the ground by a spinning car, rather than getting thrown into traffic. I got knocked out cold and some nasty cuts on my back, but otherwise fine. My girlfriend was thrown completely out of the car. She ended up with a broken collar bone, some nasty scars and came within inches of being run over by a truck. I got lucky. I don't rely on luck anymore. Belt up every time.

I walked away, pretty damn sure that without a seatbelt on that would not have been the case, less than a mile from my house when a tire blew and we went thru a wall and into a tree.
