Re: Wich one?? Low Low range ORD\'s Doubler or??>>>>>>
I think the question is how well can you control your wheel slip.
I love manual transmissions for their ability to deliver more power to wheels than an automatic. Howevever, my opinion (at this time) is the automatic slipping clutch is better for rockcrawling. I was able to go up a simple stair step in 2-HI (lockers off) with my th350/203 setup. This is a 203 that has had the part time conversion on it, so it really is in 2-HI.
I tried the stair step in granny low, 4 low, (not double low) with Lockers ON, and I got stopped, because of the wheels ALWAYS getting power, all four slipped!!!
I tried it again with granny low, low, and low. STILL all FOUR tires slipped...(albeit slowly).
It may be a question of speed... Maybe I need more momentum and speed to get me over that rock. Honestly, I don't recall what my speeds were with the automatic going up that stair step.
It MAY also be a question of my old BFG ATs not being able to grip the dirt/rocks.
I DO like the fact that all tires rotate just having me idll-ing around. I simply idle up (in granny/low/low) almost any hill now - perhaps the key is my tires and their ability to get traction. If there is a rock in the way of my going up a hill - my rig stops - becuase all the tires will slip. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
NOW, I think if I had an auto with a low / low the slipping of the transmission will allow the tires to slow down and grip that rock as needed.
I may just need more seat time using the granny SM465 and learning how to use my clutch more.
But honestly, I thought I shouldn't have to slip my clutch with sm465/203/205.
Remember, I have NEVER wheeled with a manual trans before.
The reason I went with the SM465 combo is becuase I AM SCARED TO DEATH that an automatic transmission will leave stranded on a trail...
Unlike others, I like the ability to DRIVE to a trail... run the trail... and actually DRIVE my rig home... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif /forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif
