WL: 1975 K5 (previously "Another new (to me) K5.")

First post stupidness.

I've wanted a 1973-1975 K5 for years. Always been one of my dream rigs. The other day a buddy of mine posted a link to a 1975 K5 on Craigslist. The ad sucked. No pictures, no phone number, not much of a description. Just said 1975 K5 Blazer, no engine, $600. So I emailed the guy a few times. No reply. Was starting to lose interest. Than a couple weeks ago, I clicked on the ad again, just to get the email address, and try one more time. Upon doing so, I found the ad had been updated with a telephone number. Called it, no answer. Left a voicemail, no reply. Tried a few times, nothing. I had all but given up on it, when a couple of days ago, the guy called me back. So he texted me a few pictures of it, and I said SOLD. Went and picked it up today.

Cell phone pictures I was texted:

It's not great, kind of rusty. Been sitting in a tree line for 20 years. Also has a god awful slushbox transmission and full time 4x4, but it is still a full convertible, and that is all I really care about. Of course as we were loading it up, he said he use to have a 1973 with an SM465, to bad he hadn't parked that one in the trees as well!

Here it is when we pulled up to load it.

Pretty standard 4" lift, blocks in the rear, no idea on gears, dry rotted 33x12.50x15's on horrid wheels.

Loaded on the trailer, fueling up.

Anyone need a tacky tube grille? I'll throw in the naked ladies at no extra cost!!!

There were some other cool cars in the tree line. I thought I got a picture of a pretty straight 2 door, 4 speed, 1955 Chevy that a tree had fallen on, but I messed it up somehow.

I did get the 1970 El Camino. 2 barrel for some reason, sadly an automatic as well.

Trans Am, with another lame automatic.

....and the sweetest car there, a 4 speed, 197(1?) RS Camaro.

So what's the plans?

Clean it up. Ditch the ugly wheels and cheesy tube grille. Get it driveable, take off the top and drive it.

I would like to replace the TH350/NP203 with an SM465, but I only have SM465/NP205 combos. I would like an SM465/NP208 or NP241 combo. I do have a complete TH700R4/NP208 from an '88 K5 parts rig, which while still an automatic, is worlds better than a TH350/NP203.

Nice find. Looks like it was worth the effort. Tub looks decent. Interior is shot but that's expected after 40 years and 20 sittin in the treeline. Congrats and enjoy the sun when you go topless. Lol

Why don't you want to stick a 205 in it? Have any idea why the truck was parked to begin with?

The engine was blown up, and it was parked in the trees while they found an engine, he said he realized a couple of months ago they probably weren't going to find an engine.

As for the NP 205, it's not gonna be a wheeler, just a driver. Maybe some river time. No reason to have an annoyingly loud, rattling, poor shifting, piss poor geared NP205 for that. I don't need the unnecessary strength.

Good for you on the full vert find :waytogo:

I've got a soft spot for the 73-75's as well, hence my full vert 86 build :D, for me after buying 3 complete POS full verts I finally just salvaged what I needed to convert a later model and then found a rust free 86.

Oh, wish you were closer, I've got a hydro 465/208 combo laying around that may or may not ever get used

Yeah, I have a neighbor that has a pretty bad 1973 with a 427 out of a Corvette in it. He wants the 427 for a Chevelle, I told him I would yank out the engine and bring it back, but he never has let it go (he did sell me a 1988 K1500 for $400 that had a good 350 TBI in it that I used in my '90 K5). I also know of a 1973 that is completely gone, but has the doors and top that I could have for iron price. I have thought about buying it, and using it for a top swap, but I didn't have a nice enough rig to swap it onto.

This one is rusty, but it will be good enough for what I am going to use it for.

Yeah, I wish I was closer right now as well, that is exactly what I want. I bought a 1985 K10 for $500 once just for the SM465/NP208 hydraulic setup to swap into my 1988 V10 Suburban. I wish I could find another one. I do have a 1987 V20 I could buy with one, but I would feel guilty cutting an '87 up.

That's a cool blazer. I have a 465/208 combo just sitting here too but I am a ways from Nebraska

My very first car was a 71 Camaro RS, just curious, what condition was it in, is it still there?

It's still there, it's salvageable, but it's getting bad. The plate on the back seat was from the mid to late 80's.

Burlington is actually pretty close to Nebraska, isn't it? I am on the Eastern side of Nebraska though.

That is a good find...but you need to go back and get the rest of those from that guy! You could do quite well reselling them.

Are you even going to fix the rust on that blazer?

Awesome! Can't wait to see some progress with this. You going to throw one of your sets of 3/4 ton axles in this or just leave the 1/2 axles?
