WL: 1990 K5 (California to Nebraska on 38" rubber. (WARNING: Lots of Pics))

We also climbed it one night in my Suburban when I had seven drunk passengers. I figured if I was going to be the designated driver, I might as well have some fun. I went back the next day with the Blazer and took a few pictures.

This is looking across the cut from the South side over to the North side where the gravel road runs along side of it. I believe the county road use to be on the South side.

Picture012.jpg

This is looking down the hill climb of the cut. This trail has been there for years. A lot of people take dirt bikes and 4 wheelers up it, but it has always been the place around here, where you take your truck to see what it has.

This is looking up from the bottom. Pictures never do justice to a steep climb.

Well that is all I have for now.

Looks like some good fun...if slightly puckering.

I blew the engine up in this last spring. It is kind of a hobby of mine to blow up small blocks. Then I went through a couple different engines that I got for next to nothing that didn't pan out. I followed that up with dating a girl that took ALL of my time, and led to nowhere. Well finally last week I decided it had set in the tree line to long, so I put an engine out of a 1988 K1500 I bought for $400 in it. Here are some pics.

Sitting in front of the milk barn after I reinstalled the 38's.

I had to take it back to the Cut again, to test out the new engine.

Looking down the South side of the Cut after I made it up.
0015.jpg

Proof (kind of???) that I made it up the cut.
0025.jpg

View over the hood as I drove back down the South side of the Cut.
0035.jpg

Where I spun out attempting the North side of the Cut. This was like my fourth try, and higher than I had ever made it.
0045.jpg

This pic was about as close as I could get to show how steep of an angle it actually was. I was surprised it stayed parked. That used engine must have good compression.
0055.jpg

This picture is from the bottom, and makes it look not steep at all.
0074.jpg

I ended up backing over that tree after a couple more failed attempts. Oops....
0065.jpg

Once again, the picture doesn't do the angle any justice.
0094.jpg

That was as far as I, or anyone had made it up the North side in the past 15ish years. The County had built up the road there in the late 90's and made it especially steep at the top.
0084.jpg

This was at my sister's house she is building in town.
0192.jpg

I of course had to be a jackass and drive up on it. It did not have 4 wheel drive at this point though because the front driveshaft was being repaired.
0182.jpg

It spun out pretty easy in two wheel drive.
0172.jpg

So I backed up and hit it a little farther to the right where it was steeper.
0202.jpg

I really like this picture.
0212.jpg

Looks a little funny. I need some 17" wheels for the tires I bought for it.

I was just wondering about this rig the other day! Glad you got it back out!! I wanna see you make it up the rest of the way on that cut!!!!:thumb::popcorn: And with video!!!

Oh, I made it up both sides yesterday. Alas, there was no one with me to take pictures or video. I did have to use quite a bit of throttle to make it up the North side.

man, here i was considering trailering my (new to me) K5 for a 4 hour drive.

you sir, have inspired me to just go for it. stay tuned to see if I curse you after this weekend.

Here are some crappy cell phone pictures I found from last spring. Ended up getting it stuck, but got out with a small yank from my little brother's 2006 K2500.

Here I got stuck the first time. I was only in 2wd though. Locking in the hubs and shifting into 4x4 got me out no problem.

After I got it out, I was just screwing around flexing it out. The ditch was too wide to really flex it out though.

IMG0017A.jpg

Then I decided to idle straight into the mud hole. That wasn't a great idea.

IMG0021A.jpg

I could rock back and forth a couple of feet, but not enough to build up the momentum to crawl out of the hole I had dug down on the passenger side.

IMG0022A.jpg

IMG0023A.jpg

After getting pulled out, the passenger side wheels were carrying a couple pounds of mud yet. I left that lockout engaged till I got home.

Man I hope and pray to be able to do that very same thing some day. Looks like hella fun brother. Stoked for you guys, very fun trip indeed. :waytogo: Great pics too!!!

very cool thread guys, looks like a hell of a trip. i'd have detoured through moab too haha!

oh and that vette, the wheels make the car. with any othe color of wheels it would have looked boring.

Those last few pics define "Mud Tires":pimp:

Looks like a hell of a trip, I'd love to do something like that soon.

Quick update. This is just a copy paste of a post from a local board. Hope to have better pictures later today.

Draining the gear lube out of the 14 bolt when I thought it was my problem.

The actual problem.

Another picture of the seized bearing on the output shaft.

Took it out in the old man's pasture last Saturday with a few friends. We also climbed the cut a few times.

New PTO cover for the NP205 with a fill port, so I can overfill it. Hopefully that will prevent another bearing failure.

I even took a little time to paint the triple stick parts. Weird, I know....

I tried to get an action shot of Jerry welding up my new bumper we built.

Sorry about the poor lighting, but here are a few pictures of the completed bumper. I may paint it tomorrow. See how ambitious I feel. I'm not much for painting.

Another copy/paste from the local board.

Here are some shots of the triple sticks. They are not finished. Need to mount the trim plate to the floor yet, but before I do that, I need to do a little more cutting underneath.

Post paint. Bomgaars only had one 3/4" shackle (which uses a 7/8" pin oddly enough......), so I'll have to wait till they get more in.

Thanks. I never really knew how that even came about on the front page.

Martin

No prob, i love this rig.

Bumper looks good, you gonna add any tube/pipe work to it? I feel you need some protection around the outsides. :dunno::popcorn:

btw it appears ur rearend is leaking... :D

Just went through all the pics again hahaha. Anyways looking good, Marty. I love this thing. :waytogo:
