Working on a 71 Jimmy....

Great progress, you made some great scores on Craigslist also.

It may go without saying but you're not planning on putting a hardtop on? If you were would the cage fit inside it? Really interested in a family friendly cage - Subscribed.

BTW I have family in Nampa so a trip to swap parts isn't out of the question.

Thanks NV!
I dont think I will ever run a hard top on this one. Its going to eventually get a soft top I think, but with my tube doors and the setup...she wont be a daily driver except when warm.

I measured for my cage to be a little taller than stock (or what would fit under a hard top).

Has anyone else checked out Bronco Bobs website or bought one from him? He builds cages for old Broncos and blazers and has several configurations already setup to work under a hard top. He is also very easy to work with and happy to make modifications. He seems very reasonable on price as well.

Scroll to the "roll cages" link and you can see pics of several he does.

I'm having my cage modified to fit behind the pork-chop boxes, and set back a couple inches and out in the middle to allow my seats to recline. Will have picks of the install in the next couple weeks I hope.

Thanks for the link. I've been trying to find a relatively inexpensive way to put a cage in my '72. A short review would be great once yours is done.

No problem! I will document the Roll Cage process and report back with pics and thoughts on the product and installation!

Beadlocks looks sick! Your truck is one mean green machine!

Oh. P.S. Thanks for the tip on the rear seats! I picked up a pair off craiglist for $100. Score!

Right on! Craigslist is the greatest place ever...as long as your fast on the trigger when you see a super deal.

post up some pics of your seats when you get them in!

If you build it, they will crawl...

Got my Doubler setup from Jed's machining this week.
Too messy a process to snap many pictures mid-stream.

1) Start with a 32 spline np 205 and a messy np203 from a th350
2) Seperate the range box from the 203, scrap the rest
3) Drink Beer
4) Use at least 4 cans of WD40 and Degreaser and 2 boxs of rags to get down through 1/2" of grease and grime until you find metal under-there
5) Drink beer
6) Put your new Billit intermediate shaft back in the 203 range box, with 15 fat needles, and 1 itty bitty one that holds the notched washer thing
7) Drink Beer
8) Break a couple pairs of snap ring pliers, curse, run to lowes and the beer store multiple times.
9) Drink 2 Beers
10) Curse again while getting the 15 fat needles in 2 different spots to all stay put while installing gears and shafts.
11) Beer
12) Change out the Rear output on the 205 to get away from the slip yoke
13) Change out the Front input to a 32 spline short and sell the 32 spline long on ebay
14) Beer and Beer
15) Grind off the tab on the 203 bearing retainer plate and bolt it up to the 205 with Jeds adapter.
16) Use up your last squirt of RTV and run back to the store for more
17) Beer (once home)
16) Do a pre-hookup of the shifting bracket and make sure it goes thorugh all the gears.
17) Beer?
18) Add a coat of Rustoleum Primer, and wait for it to dry
19) Clean your hands, snap a pic, and watch it dry while enjoying a Beer.
20) Tonight will add the Flat Black top-coats

& this weekend hopefully, it will magically walk or float over and get under the truck and bolt itself up with all the cross-members. Can you say heavy and awkward?

Prep and Paint - My favorite

Cage is being delivered soon.....so I better get the interior ready.

Cleaned out the rear end, sanded it all down by hand, sprayed out the dust with compressed air, wiped out every nook and cranny with Mineral spirits so it has a nice scratched up non-oily surface for some primer and bedliner to stick too.

Added a coat of spray primer....and then the first thin coat of Bed liner.
Second coat will happen this weekend.

LOL I hear you on that NV - Beer is very important to building things I always say. Makes me smarter, steadier, less soar, and more thirsty  BEER

PART 1 of the FAMILY CAGE Story:

I went through Broncobob for my cage bending. First thing for me was some custom setup and measurments to send over. But first a Beer.

(a) I prefer a good angle on the rear hoop, instead of straight up and down. Also wanted to leave room behind my tool-boxes for tube. I needed a measurement of where to start the "bend" towards the front from vert...that would allow the box's to open un-obstructed and still look good. Decided to use 27.5" up from the floor, to start the forward tilt/bend. A nice 45 deg tilt will get me just behind the rear passenger headrest.

(Beer)

(b) I hate it when I cant recline my seats and the bar blocks movement...so I decided to set the middle hoop back a few inches to where it can sit wider inside the rail angle. Gained me about 3" on width and 3" on setback to move it here - Perfect. Decided on 65.5" width out to out.

(Beer)

I want it tall enough to clear heads and mount things on (Hi-lift) -and I dont plan on a hard top ever. I decided to add 3" to the stock broncobob height overall, and can easily modify it down if needed by trimming, when I see it being fit to the rig. Probably several Beers

Cage showed up yesterday and so I threw a couple of the tubes in to get a feel. The boxes will open perfect, clearing the rear hoop bend by about 3/4" or more. Looks a bit too tall, but not bad - can trim the height to whatever I want. It came with feet pads to weld on so I can bolt it in when I get it set

More to come soon......w/Beer

How many Newcastle's for the rear hoop and you get yourself a new better one? :)

Newcastle Brown Ale (pronounced: Newkie Broon) is my favorite beer.... must be a 1st Gen thing! :waytogo:

:usaflag:

The doubler was still on the bench so put that SOB in the truck. Still needs some paint, cross-members, and installing the sticks....but the drive lines are now measured!

Decided to try a Winch from Recon - not a warn but similar specs/warranty and look very well built. This is the Grandaddy 17,500lb model with wire-less remote and took some coaxing to make her fit but she is home now. Cant wait to try it.

Also I decided to use bear-claws on the door latches. Just finished one side minus clean-up and paint but they slam and open like butter. The release is on the inside bed you can see in pic. Just pull up on the pin and she pops open about 6 inches.

Hehe 17,500 Lbs winch? Hope your frame mounts hold up. What is a "Bear Claw" for your door latches?

Go big or go home right?

If it rips the frame in half then it will be worth seeing and neat pictures. The mounts are not going to break "first", the way I designed them.

Ahhh Nice - thanks for the info. I've been toying with doing this type of tube door thing but when I wheel hard the doors seem to prevent the whole truck from folding in half. Seriously, when flexed up I cannot open the doors because their pinched shut. Once you have your full cage in, you should be able to reduce that. But, have you had any chance to twist this truck?
