I went ahead and bought the xj shaft 65 bucks on eBay. Mine had way to much slopp both at rag joint and at column.
When you heat the shaft DO NOT heat for more than a min and 20 sec or it will ooze plastic out (i tested it with old shaft)
You will have to Dremel the steering box out put shaft so the bolt will fit.
Not a lot.
Will attach pics

These are great additions. When I was in school and had more free time, I was pulling them from XJs, welding and selling.

If it has some slop still, check the rubber isolater for movement. I always just weld the body and shaft together. Those shafts were from junkyard XJs with who knows how many miles. I still have mine in use from 8-9 years ago. Dunno

my stock one did the darn thing moved almost 1/2 an inch
new shaft took care of all the slop way better feel on the steering

One of the few systems on mine that is still factory, so I sprang for the shaft. Serious lack of wrecking yards in my new town. Mine is pretty good still, we shall see if the improvement shows.

With my hydro assist, it’s dead straight. FF to 4:20 :D and you’ll see how she drives around 75mph. (The rest is just babble about the assist)

You sir are a genius and mind reader
I've been contemplating doing the same on my k20. I just finished replacing all the TRE's, drag links and ball joints to include gear box an still have some play, I know I need to replace the rag joint, but I'm going that far i might as well do the XJ shaft mod.
I knew it was a matter of doing a search for it here
an Boom
You had it an posted all about it.
Cant thank you enough
How are you liking the crisp response now

If you do have a pull n pay yard nearby you can walk out with one for under 20 bucks and 10 minutes of your time. It’s amazing how fast stuff comes apart when you don’t give a rats ass about the stuff you remove by force to get it out of the way.

Remove the pinch bolt from the steering gear on the xj. Go under the dash and pull the lower panel out of the way. Drop the two nuts for the main column saddle. Zip the two or three bolts off the firewall plate. Unplug the column and yank it into the interior. Pull the upper pinch bolt off the I-shaft and remove it.

That only took 10 minutes and I had never pulled one on an xj before. It’s super easy.

My problem is the nearest yard is an hour away and I won't stop with just pulling the one part i need... $70 for a new part delivered to my door saves me a lot of time and money.

where did you find one delivered for 70?

Great mod, I did this years ago. Yanked one from junk yard, write up is spot on for removal, lol. Unbolt and yank

Reminds me of seeing an Excursion go up in a ball of flames at the salvage yard. It was pretty far away on the other side of a fence, but I could feel the heat. Nobody motioned to get out, so I finished pulling the XJ shaft I had started on. Guys in the office acted like it was no big deal, so I wonder how often that happens?
