You are doing WHAT to a 1968 SAAB?

After two years I'm starting to think that myself. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I'm not THAT far from a first start.

Props to you though man.. Holy hell the amount of work that you've put into this thing is incredible. To have the vision for a project like this and stay at it progressing along as you have is inspiring.

Can't wait to see pics with you at the track in this thing!

The thing is, I'm still not tired of working on it. For me the build is the real fun. Like my V8 Miata--It's been done for two years. I have driven it maybe 100-200 miles a year since. I'm planning on selling it in spring seeing as it just sits there. Gotta make room for the next project. I'll start right into something as soon as this is done. I just don't know what it is yet. Most likely another swap of some sort.

If you think you are buying that 81 camaro and miata swapping it you are wrong.

Nah, figured 2JZ swap would be better. I'll take the motor out of the Supra that you are going to BBC swap.

Before that camaro gets any engine that has writing on it that looks like stick figures and stick goats and stick huts I will push it in the river to hear the splash.

and when I do the supra with the BBC swap I will haul the drivetrain directly to alters and watch them put it in the cuber before I leave.

Finally got a chance to mill the flanges on the manifold.

Turbo is finally installed for good tonight.

Been working steadily on it. Finished the Corrado big brake kit and Carbotech pad install that I swapped over from my V8 Miata. Lots of little details. I have (I think) all of the wiring hooked up. Threw a battery in and it cranked. Need coolant, lube for the tranny and diff and brake and clutch fluid and I'll try to start it. I patched in the MAF for the first start so it's like stock. When it runs I'll swap in the Megasquirt. No need for any more variables than I have now.

I commend the BOATLOAD of work...

Boatload is subjective. I'm probably going to have about 800 hours into it. That's about right for a normal two-winter project for me. I say two-winter instead of two year as almost all of my shop time comes in the winter. Most of my worklogs tend to have pretty big holes in them from April to November. Too many other things to do outside. Not much else to do now. It's about zero degrees again. It's March!

Picked up my new driveshaft from Inland Truck Parts. They couldn't use any of my old components so I had to buy all new parts. $475 down the drain. Oh, well, had to have it.

Decided to see if I could get it to start. Couldn't get the fuel pump to come on to charge the system. Finally figured out there was a ground by the rear tail lights that wasn't hooked up yet as I haven't done anything back there. Hooked that up and fuel pump came on. It charged the system and then started puking fuel under the car. Found out it was coming from a fuel injector. Pulled the rail and the offending fuel injector and there was no insulator under that injector. This baffled me as I drove the car home 100 miles before parting it out and the condition of the injector was such that I can't imagine the last time it was out. I don't know how it ran as long as it did.

Didn't have an insulator. I was going to pick one up tomorrow until I decided that it's just temporary until the Megasquirt goes in and bigger injectors go in. Ended up stuffing in two o-rings in the bore that fit tight. Buttoned it up and...

(clicky)

Nice! always cool to knock off those kinda build milestones! :waytogo:

Ouch $475 for a steel shaft? Are the Mazda flange/slip yoke special or something?

The factory parts are all spin welded yokes and peened u-joints. Not rebuildable. Remember, the car originally was a 108 hp car so they never had issues.

It was difficult to find components. Somebody in CA makes them for racing so they were expensive. Yoke was $60, flange $50, weld-on yokes $64, u-joints $40, Tube $120. Labor for the whole thing was like $110 so the total was $450+tax.

Intercooler and cold air intake complete. Filter is between the SAAB inner and old Miata inner fender so the only air that it can possibly draw is outside air.
