Governor from the turbo 400, looks fine to me?

And I just took this one today. All of this fluid ran down from behind the converter in the space of about a week of the truck being parked.

Probably gonna start pullin the trans this weekend sometime if the rain holds off. Time to start learning about the innards of a th400. :doah:

Fixed it for you

Never gonna happen. My dd is a standard trans...and I'm sick and tired of it. My old truggy was a 134:1 crawl ratio SM465/doubler/5:13 geared truck. The ultra low crawl ratio was nice, but a lot of work....now I'm ready for the convenience of an auto trans. :D

Nahh...I'm not willing to get into a perpetual state of building my truck. I want to drive it, not spend all my time building. Too many people get stuck there...coughgreg72cough. :haha:

I'll rebuild the 400, add my trans go re-programming kit and a few other goodies for more beef/reliability and call it done as far as the trans goes.

Been considering one of the DIY4x bumper center things...need something to mount my Ramsey 12k winch to. I need a winch waaay more than I need a 4l80e or nv4500. :haha:

DING DING MOTHERLOVIN DING!

We have a winner. I am of that frame of mind as well of late. :waytogo:

I don't have any idea what you are talking about.... It's been MONTHS since I did any sort of "building" on my truck.

:usaflag:

Go buy the ATSG manual for $25 or so, and if you can find it, the Ron sessions book on the TH400.

Got the 205 out today-

Did the 205 by myself. Definitely a heavy bitch, but not so bad that I felt unsafe. Probably finish pulling the trans tomorrow or the next day.

And Zeus's home 'till this is all done, my buddies back yard-

LOL - Looks like you intentionally corralled your rig for being out of control....

There is a road in Marianna Fl. Called Bump Nose Road.

No idea why the name.

I know how coincidences and things like that work. You buy a new car, and suddenly you see cars like it everywhere. They were there all the time, but you had no reason to notice.

I am quite sure that that road is no more dangerous than any other, but the name sticks with you.
For several years, it seemed like they were finding a body, or there was a murder on Bump Nose Road every couple of days.

I have a second cousin twice removed, (not far enough) or something like that, who lives up there. He called one Saturday and said he could not get his scope sighted in.

Since if its a decent scope, mounted properly, it usually takes me 2 shots to zero one in, I rode up.
He said he had a great place to shoot. Big clay pit that everybody uses.

We were riding along down this dirt road, and I casually asked what road it was.

Bump Nose Road.........

I reached down and loaded my rifle. I know it was stupid, but I was checking over my shoulder, and looking hard at every truck we passed.

Of course, two days after that, they found a body in the clay pit. Nothing to do with us, it was dumped there later.

Doesn't have much to do with your truck, but when I saw the address, I got a flashback.........

Got the trans out today...man what a cluster f*ck that was. :doah:

No assistance, jacks or anything else. Just 'Jethro Power' to get the job done. Everything went ok till it was time to bench press the trans off the crossmember and away from the engine. I couldn't pull the lock/flat washers off one of the rubber trans mount studs, just figured I'd be able to push everything up through the mount and that would strip the washers off the stud. Boy was I wrong. :eek1:

I was layin under there on my back wiggling the trans back off the motor, when it came free, I started pushing up to get the mount out of the crossmember, but the damn lock washer got so wedged on the threads of the stud that I didn't think it was ever gonna come off. I raised my legs up to support the trans, then tried to reach a screwdriver that was like 1/1000th's of an inch out of my reach. While doing this, front of the trans tipped down, the torque converter fell off and landed about 1/8" from my head. All this time I'm still tryin to support the trans and pry the damn lock washer off the stud. My arms are shaking and I'm about 5 seconds from muscle failure. The front of the trans finally fell down enough to force the washer off, was able to toss the crossmember out of the way and lower the trans down to my chest with the last ounce of strength I had. I musta laid there like that for a good 5 minutes in recovery mode. I never did reach the damn screwdriver. :eek1:

Note to self- next time unbolt the mount from the adapter, instead of the mount from the crossmember. :haha::haha:

Anyways, here's some pictures. My camera died, so these are from my phone.

I pulled the pump off to see if anything was obvious blown up. Nothing looked broke to me, of course I really have no idea what I'm lookin at, so who knows.

Is there a way to tell if a pump is bad?

yeah, it will rattle and look burned... if the inside parts are silver, and red and not black, they are still good, at least that's what i gathered from my trans guy

hate to say it Joe, but I'm betting the inadvertent low fluid driving hurt it... tho the 400's can definitely take more of that kinda abuse than most other trannys...

I'm definitely no tranny rebuilder, but iirc, the converter is usually what gets hurt most often when they are real low on fluid.. but I'm sure a myriad of things can happen including pump damage...

it looks like the fluid was nice and red, good.... might wanna give a little whiff of the converter opening and see if it smells burnt...

I know Heath and Dave are pretty familiar with the 400, maybe they have better insight...

The low fluid driving thing was one day, and over the course of less than an hour or so of actual driving. Topped it off and it was good for the next week or so. It has always had nice firm, crisp shifts...almost as if it had some kind of shift kit in it already. That didn't change after runnning it low. I'm not saying you're wrong of course, I don't know a thing about auto transmissions. Just that that explanation doesn't 'feel' right to me.

In fact, just remembered this- when I was changing out the filter a couple weeks ago, I was reading through the instructions for my trans-go re-programing kit trying to decide if I wanted to install it, and noticed that the valve body already had a mod- a small plug that's called for in the trans-go kit. Makes me think this tranny has been apart before. Fluid has always smelled and looked ok.

Then it sat in that mudhole for a couple hours. Thats when it started acting up, from the very moment I got it running again. Stupid asshole truck. :doah:
