03 gmc duramax with 350k (BBT) transmission fun

Rare parts g2 tie rods are what I like. And at 300 bucks for a pair of inners and outers they're a steal

Got the tie rod issue solved. Turns out the tie rods were NOT different lengths, they just appeared different because the boot was different. Once I got them off side-by-side it was apparent they were the same.

The solution ended up being to cut them down 3/4". I went ahead and replaced the inner tie rods before cutting them down since the new ones had more threads available.
some of the gm ifs lifts require inner tie rod trim down to let the outer come in more for full alignment .
Turns out you were right on the money. Once I cut them down a bit the alignment went off without a hitch.

I've got a new problem. :(

I decided to install a new head unit and backup camera. In the process I ended up pulling the instrument cluster (to run wires behind it) and also I let the battery get almost dead. Now, the truck won't start, key fob doesn't work and door buttons don't work. :dunno:
The truck won't stay running either. It will start, but dies immediately. I read somewhere that the BCM (??) needs to be reset by disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes. Hopefully that does it because I'm at a loss otherwise. :what:

I mentioned some time ago that I was also having a problem with the doors randomly locking on me. It was getting worse, so I knuckled down and took it to the dealer to find out what the problem was. Turns out my master window controller is bad. The dealer wants $250 for the part, plus another $200 or so to install it and "program" it. ??

I've looked all over and I can't find any reference to anyone having to program the door switch. I can find the switch online for $150 or so, and probably a lot cheaper from a junk yard, but what is this programming they are talking about? Anybody heard of that?

There's all sorts of goofy stuff like that with changing electronics out. While this is a great resource and a lot of us have these trucks dieselplace is really the ck5 of duramax trucks. If you haven't already go there and see what you find.

On another note I have been really lucky replacing things on my truck with parts from online GM dealers. I've found I can get the parts WAY cheaper than my local dealer (even with using discounts I can get). I think the new electronics are way sensitive to very small things and can cause issues.

I'm betting that's bull. I bet you @Babaganoosh (since his company's sister dealership is GM) could get you a straight answer.

Thanks. Programming the switch really doesn't make any sense. When I went to pick the truck up I questioned the guy some more and he still insists that a new one would have to be programmed to work with the BCM, and furthermore that his guys didn't think it was possible to reprogram a used one... :surepal:
I'll check out dieselplace too.

If it's just a switch then no reprogramming should be required, if it is a module then yes.

Ok, got a part number from the dealer (15883320) and then did a little more research. It turns out that what needs to be programmed is the mirror controller part. The switch comes preprogrammed for one type of mirror, so if you are lucky, then no other programming is needed. If you have a different type of mirror, then it'll need to be reprogrammed to work with that mirror.
Either way, the switch will work just fine, it just might not control your mirrors. I have the towing package mirrors, so I think I'm going to take a look at the junk yard and see if I can get lucky.

I don't think that's correct. It's a drivers door module and should have to be programmed to the vin to work. I supposed you could get lucky. I've installed them before though, and they wouldn't do anything until programmed.

If you can find one online and install it the most a dealer will charge is an hour labor, even though it will only take 10 minutes.

No interesting pics, but finally got the door module taken care of.

At least from my sample size of 1, I appear to be correct. :dunno: I finally found one at a junkyard and it did have the same mirrors as my truck. It was plug and play and works like a charm. Total cost $42. A long way from the $450 the dealer wanted. :yikes:

I wonder now if maybe bc it was used and was already programmed at one time, unlike the new ones I've installed at work. Good for you either way!

After thinking about it I was wondering the same thing. maybe new they don't have a program at all.
Now I'm wondering if it would have worked with different mirrors.

I've suddenly developed a pretty good tranny leak. :(
I crawled under it to see if I could see where it is coming from but it's hard to tell. I'm hoping that it's just the pan gasket. maybe the cold affected it?

I pulled it into the shop and topped it off and let it run for about 10 minutes hoping to see where it was leaking but all I saw was a couple of tiny drops that looked like they were just drips that shook off of the pan, but this morning I looked under it and there is a puddle under the truck about 4" across. :dunno: It wasn't driven at all, just pulled out of the shop and parked.
