Does your temp gauge in the dash not work? Is that 190 coolant temp? I can't make it out...

It does work. It comes off the driver side head. You can see it below the oil pressure gauge. ECT will run up to about 195 before the fan kicks on for the first time. After that it runs about 177 to 183.
 
The main thing I want from the iDash is AFR and RPM. The other 2 are just nice to have.
 
Do you see much variation between the head and the intake? Is it the port toward the front of the head or the back? I would expect the back to be the same or slightly cooler since the coolant in a SBC travels mainly rearward through the block and then forward through the head. Assuming everything looked as expected I would probably want to see something else, manifold vacuum or injector duty cycle or something, instead of two measurements for the same thing?
 
I just like having the digital read out of the temp. The factory gauge just gives number at the top and bottom with 3 tick marks between.

The factory sender is between the #1 & #3 spark plug IIRC. If coolant temps are on the rise, the head will lead the intake by about 10 to 20 degrees depending on the scenario. Steady state they are running about the same.
 
i never quite understood the gauge in the c10.. mine was out to lunch at best and even when it wasnt.. i never really knew what temp it was just like ya said.
 
I certainly like just having a number instead of trying to math out what each of the tick marks between 100 and 250 represent and what the gap between marks might be as well.

I do too. If I'm going to be on the highway I'll run torque through my phone or chromebook. But I have done that enough I know if the stock gauge is at the middle hash mark it is at 200°. It is close enough I can tell at a glance without using my phone or other device.
 
The other thing I like about adding this gauge is having it up closer to my eyeline. I don't seem to look down at the gauges on the factory dash as much.
 
I just watched a recent episode of Engine Masters where they did dyno testing on different octane fuel; 87, 91, 110, 116. At the end of the day the octane didn't had minimal effect on power. Timing didn't even change. As @imiceman44 mentioned this is because octane rating has to do with the resistance to knock. This was also backed up by some other internet reading I did.

So bearing all that in mind, it has me wondering why I've seen the MPG improvement. I didn't make any changes to the EFI. Was I getting some pre-detonation on the 85 octane 10% ethanol stuff? Because that would have dropped engine efficiency. The fuel is coming from a different station, so maybe it's just better fuel?
 
I know back when i used to use gas and a paint brush to clean truck parts, the gas id get from station to station was pretty different. Until that point i thought it was sorta all the same.. definitely not! Some was yellower and detergenty and some just plain smelt bad..

Have no idea on regulatory bodies of fuels in the states... or in canada for that matter. I just now know, not all pumps are equal because of the octane rating.

That episode got me wondering about what fuel to put in the c10 now..

Dyno is one thing. Real world on the ground is something else. I’ve never had any vehicle I’ve own get better mileage on 85 than 87, or on 87 than 91. That was tracking it on a spread sheet

My turd work van gets 20.5 on 87, 21.4 on 87 no eth, and 21.5 on 91. Tracked over a 16 month period
